tax number? which of the three?

Hi ! and sorry for the quick message.

I need to provide my tax number immediately, and reviewing a letter I received from the Stadt Zurich / Steureamt, (Quellensteuer auslandischer arbeitnehmer).. I can't decide or choose which pne is the number.

There is a RegNr with 11 number : 78X.XX.XXX.XXX
and a AHVN13 with 13 number: 75X.XXXX.XXXX.XX
and a PID in this format and 8 digits: 2X-XXXX-XX

Which of the above would be the official tax number to provide?

Thank you again and apolgies for the rush!

No doubt the request is for an EU tax no, CH is not in the EU.

I would use the register no, which you have not quoted.

Re: tax number? which of the three?

US institutions require an American no which you probably won't have. I always leave it blank on the W8 BEN form

Re: tax number? which of the three?

I just had to provide my TIN (Tax Identification Number) on a form and it turned out to be AHVN13 (after trying all three ...).

Cheers,
Steve

Re: tax number? which of the three?

Since January 1st 2017 the AHV-13 (can also be found on your health insurance card) act as the TIN in Switzerland.

Defined in Art. 2 Abs. 1 Lit. f of the AIAG (Federal act on automatic exchange of tax information)

Re: tax number? which of the three?

Although to complicate things a bit - that is only in effect from 01.01.2017

So tax returns for 2016 probably still use the cantonal tax register number (mine does), and if the requirement is to link things to a tax return before 2017 you would need to use that number.

Swiss tax return forms will most likely in the future still have other numbers on them. I never cared what numbers are on it, but I remember that the AHV-No was already in the past on it.

The TIN is useful and needed when you have to communicate with foreign tax offices or fill in foreign declarations such as the U.S. form W8. In the past you could leave the foreign TIN blank, but now you may should put the AHV-13 in where asked for a foreign TIN.

Sure it is the AHV number (13 digits) as you mention the quellensteuer. Thats the most universal number used
