Already got a tax invoice before 2015 year end??!!

Hi,

I don't understand why I need to pay tax in so much advance in Canton Zug.

I received a bill named "Provisorische Rechnung (Total steuerbares provisorisch 2015)". I googled it and found the following website but still not clear to me:

https://www.zg.ch/behoerden/finanzdi...ng-np-anpassen

I just moved here in August 2015 from another canton. C permit holder, I believe people declare their 2015 taxable income and pay tax around 2016 March-June.

Do any of you in Zug have the same problem? Can I just ignore this bill and wait till spring 2016 to submit a usual tax form? This bill says a payable deadline is 2015.12.31.

Many thanks.

It varies by Canton, but in some, like OW, and presumably Zug, it's perfectly normal to receive, and pay, a provisional bill for tax in the current year, based on estimates from last year's tax return.

If your circumstances have considerably changed since the previous year you can contact them and ask for it to be reassessed, but otherwise just pay up. If it's slightly over the amount due you'll get the difference refunded after the final amount is calculated when you put in your tax return next year.

In ZH your supposed to pay in advance too. You will be charged interest on a daily basis. They can't make you pay until the no's are legally binding i.e. 30 days after the final calculations.

Do a calculation of your actual liability & pay that if you don't like the no's they suggest.

If you have cash, pay as you will get a better rate of interest than the bank.

Thanks for the quick answer.

The tax bill is really based on raw income, without any deduction (e.g. transportation fees, business lunch, home office, etc.). That's not the usual tax form I had in another canton.

Usually, in my experience with another canton, I wait:
- early Feb: HR calculate the annual income (she gave me a paper to submit to tax office as part of my tax profile)
- by end March: I fill a tax form with all possible deduction and submit
- by end June: receive a real tax bill, and pay by deadline June 30

So I feel I pay something almost 6-month ahead in this strange Canton. I know I have pay the bill eventually, but do I have the obligation to pay ahead?

Well, I actually thought that paying ahead is the norm?! It's certainly the case in Vaud.

What can you do? Your new canton isn't the only one asking for taxes at the beginning of the year; and some of us have already become proper Swiss and did the next year's financial projections. :D Fingers crossed that we stick to it. :D

I guess tax is a major reason people move to Zug. Should not really have come as a surprise, the prompt demand.

As multiple EFers have said above, Cantonal provisional bills are usually in advance based on previous years submission. Federal provisional bills are usually send soon after the year ends e.g. for Tax Year 2015, provisional Cantonal bill sent out in middle 2015 and provisional Federal bill sent out in eary 2016.

If you are really bothered that it overstates your income, call the Zug tax office and tell them your last reported taxable income from whatever canton you moved from. They should be ok to take that as a basis and send a lowered provisional demand.

Usually the Tax office gives you better interest on overpaid tax than your friendly neighbourhood bank. Keep that in mind.

Provisional bills are quite common in Bern too. You've got 3 options as I see it:

1. Pay the bill. If you happen to pay too much, the next bill will be adjusted downward or you'll get a refund with interest.
2. Ask for a reassessment before you make a payment, just to be sure the amounts are right. I'd do this in writing with a registered letter, tbh.
3. Ignore the bill and don't do anything. Open a new thread in January to complain about the Betreibung on your record.;)

It is in Neuchâtel too.

Canton Aargau and Canton Geneva don't have this Provisional tax system.

Well, good to know, now I learn new things and I am not the only one paying tax ahead.

Thanks all of you for sharing your experience.;) Very helpful

Your provisional tax bill says that it's due by the end of December (at least, mine does each year in Zug). I would therefore not advise ignoring it; if you don't have the cash, contact the tax office and see if they're willing to delay the payment, or if you have the legal right to wait until final calculation. They're always easygoing when I ask questions.

Since you just moved cantons, they're more likely to be understanding of the financial hardship this year than they would be next year.

Aargau most certainly has the provisional tax system. The 2015 provisional payment was due at the end of October.

You won't get a Betreibung as an estimate as is not legally enforceable. The bill is only legally valid for collection 30 days after the final assessment, assuming no appeal has been made.

But you will be charged interest on late payment. So how does that work?

When we moved cantons BS to SO we had to pay the current and previous year's bills in one hit as BS does it 1 year in arrears and SO in the current year. :msnsick:

If you pay too little on account they will charge you interest, if you pay too much they will pay you interest.

You should have money to pay current taxes out of this years income, so don't spend every chf you get each month!
