| | Help to get a credit card/prepay card
Hello volks,
I would like to get a card to buy on the internet (flights, online shops) and in some cases to use it on other countries when I am on holidays.
Which one do you recommend me? It hasn't to be a credit one.
I checked "revolut" but I am not sure if this is the best option for someone who is living in Switzerland.
Thanks for the help

Should I pay comissions when I use the card abroad?

Have had my free cards for years now. No yearly fees what so ever (not like others that just offer it 1st year only).

I guess the cheapest (albeit not easiest) combination to pay is the following: - coop + migros CreditCards for inside Switzerland (1:1 in CHF)
- dkb.de account with Visa-Card for the €-zone (1:1 in EUR)
- Transfer your CHFs to dkb with transferwise and/or currencyfair (get good rates from CHF to EUR)
- for the rest of the world, revolut.com (get good rates for all other currencies, specifically USD and GBP, but also everything else)
- to load revolut, still waiting to do that directly in CHF, until then going the detour via dkb
- Unfortunately currencyfair/transferwise directly to revolut doesn't work.

| | | | | Do you need a german domicil for the dkb.de account? Sounds quite interesting!
Cheers

DKB.de accepts also Swiss and Austrian addresses. You might have to pop-over the border to do the PostIdent ID check.

Cheers | | | | | They open accounts for everyone, doesn't matter where you're domiciled.
Exceptions are: US-citizens/persons/residency, and sanctioned countries such as North Korea, Syria and few others.
For PostIdent I recommend to actually use their "postident" option by going to a German postoffice, as this is standardised and free.
If you get a locally endorsed confirmation that's also fine, but it's just not standardised and costly.
They might also offer remote identification through video-chat, or is that limited to www.number26.eu (who don't offer accounts for Swiss residents yet)? I´m not sure!
Rgds, Christian

This is what I thought... coop and migros cards are not a good idea abroad.
DKB/Revolut look like the best option for me.
Is it enough going with the passport to a german post office?
Does Revolut need some type of ID check? How do they do it?

| | Re: Help to get a credit card/prepay card | Quote: | | | | | coop and migros cards are not a good idea abroad. | | | | | I would be interested in seeing numbers here.
Use abroad (at a point of sales) comes with two basic cost drivers:
- foreign exchange rate used by the issuer
- fee for use of card in foreign denomination
Almost every single card issuer I am aware of tries to hide the foreign exchange rate _they_ use in conversion - it should be https://www.mastercard.com/global/currencyconversion/ and https://www.visaeurope.com/making-pa...exchange-rates but it _could_ also be a different rate.
Where issuers have to be transparent is the conversion _fee_ (which always comes on top of the conversion rate) - and here, the Migros Cumulus card is not that horrible, at 1.5%.
DKB currency conversion for point of sale transactions is 1.75%, for instance - and I keep harping about POS, because with the DKB card, in a non-native currency, you withdraw cash from an ATM and then use the cash to pay.
For the record: I consider these fees for foreign exchange rate conversion extortionate in general, not only for credit card use, but also for plain (electronic) money transfer.
Oh, and please do not get me started on Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynami...ncy_conversion | This user would like to thank daffy99 for this useful post: | |

I have a credit card and corresponding bank account for each Euro and CHF. So 2 cards and 2 accounts to be used in the respective currency zones. Bank card idem.
