Re: DeVere group cold calling again.

These lot are still going, I've been doing a good job of avoiding / blocking them, but just had another friendly chat with them.

Also their trustpilot reviews are suspiciously good. Con artists.

They still advertise on WRS and they have some guy pitch-hitting for Henk Potts while he is on leave.

Re: DeVere group cold calling again.

Anytime I get a cold call, whether on my mobile or fixed line, I say I am too busy to talk now and they have to write a letter.

That answer works very well with the bank scammers who've rung me twice to say that my identity has been stolen and I need to make my money safe by transferring it.

If it were stolen from my account my insurance would cover it. If I did anything stupid it would not.

And since I know I am among the last generation to have defined benefit pensions there is no chance DeVere or anybody else is going to scam me out of it. As they pretend to know so much about me already, surely they know where to write to without my telling them.

How the hell do these People get my Swiss number. Given it to nearly nobody and only had it for a year. Someone is selling data.

Re: DeVere group cold calling again.

When my phone gets a call from any unknown mobile number, it just sends an autoreply "text/e-mail" and hangs up in 5 seconds. For landlines the script shows the search result for the number and hangs up after 20 seconds, if I do not answer.

One major source of contact details for these businesses are apps like TrueCaller, alternative communication apps and other apps mingling with a phonebook, messages and calls, since those apps essentially sell user's phonebooks to anyone willing to pay for "anonymus" data. They may just sell the number, the nickname for this number and some metadata, but that is enough for contact's number to leak. Technically there is no real name in this data, but with a slightest effort the metadata can be matched with other data collected by other actors and other means (once again, on itself such data is technically "anonymus", but with ad trackers, "pixels" and other digital anal probes added to the mix, it is a simple task of cross referencing of records). That data is bundled and both traded privately and on [automated] user data exchanges (legal on the surface, everyone on those exchanges accept no liability on their side for any data deanonymization and misuse), and later after matching with both legally and illegally collected data with real world personal information it becomes a very useful database for all kinds of unwanted trades.
So, if some of your friends and colleagues do not care enough about their privacy and share their phonebook with any app (including the permission to collect an activity data for diagnostics and marketing purposes by the manufacturer of someone's iphone), chances are your number got to spammers from one of those channels.

Re: DeVere group cold calling again.

Interesting quote on their UK website (https://www.devere-uk.co.uk/):

"We are aware that deVere United Kingdom and associated Group companies have been cloned and UK residents are being contacted by a fraudulent company/companies, using our company details, images and London office address. If you have any communication from anyone using the email addresses that DO NOT end in @devere-uk.co.uk or @devere-group.com, please contact us as soon as possible on uk@devere-uk.co.uk or directly by telephone on +44 (0) 333 344 9530.

In addition to this, we have also been made aware of unsolicited calls being made by unscrupulous organisations which claim to have been recommended to contact individuals following details being passed from deVere United Kingdom. What follows is usually an invitation to invest in a European IPO – often a recognised name, frequently an airline. If you are contacted in this way, please DO NOT allow the call to continue, take the person’s details and refer this back to us via the contact details we provide above – It is a boiler room scam, we will report this to our regulator. deVere United Kingdom does not share client data with third party companies, so being contacted in this way will not be as a result of an introduction from us.

deVere United Kingdom and deVere Mortgages are trading names of deVere and Partners (UK) Ltd, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority FRN (469151). Auto Enrolment, Inheritance Tax Planning and Buy to let Mortgages are not regulated by the FCA.

deVere and Partners (UK) Limited are registered in England and Wales company registration number 05260529."

Someone you gave the number to, e.g. your employer, may have passed your number on to someone who contacted them claiming to be something they're not, e.g. British embassy. I suspect that cold callers may blag their way to British expats that way.

I remember seeing the cloning report on the FCA website a few years ago and suspect that the claim that they were cloned was a ploy to (1) attempt to distance themselves from unscrupulous activities/boiler room scamming by claiming that was being done by a clone and (2) imply that they're a company with the kind of stature and reputation that would inspire a clone.

Maybe it's a bit like these annoying calls from health insurance brokers.

Many have this line that they are calling on behalf of my health insurance to review my coverage.

When I ask them if they can name my insurance, my coverage and my number, they typically hang up.

I wonder how many people don't see through the simple trick?

Re: DeVere group cold calling again.

Another way is just switching the language once you realize it's a marketing call.

I switch to French or Spanish, and keep talking until they end the call. One poor guy really interested in his job asked if we could switch to English: lo siento, no hablo Inglés. I guess my phone number is flagged as not useful because I rarely get a call these days.
