Visa Debit in Switzerland?

Hi,
is there any way to obtain a Visa Debit, MasterCard Debit, or Visa electron card in Switzerland, in order to not get ripped off, when buying a plane ticket?
Thank you

Please don't be put off by Tom's reply. It's a certain kind of humour.
Just wait a bit, and I expect someone will be along to answer with a bit more detail.

Tom
They are pre-paid credit cards, not visa "debit"

Re: Visa Debit in Switzerland?

If you have a UBS debit card why do you need a Visa debit one? A debit card's a debit card surely. Both will come straight off your bank account.

Re: Visa Debit in Switzerland?

I use my credit cards as debit cards, with full payment at the end of month.

Medea,

AFAIK you can't use the Maestro (Bank debit) cards for online purchases.

Because it then also allows you to use your debit card at places that usually only accept credit cards?

Re: Visa Debit in Switzerland?

Maybe it's just me, but I'd think a debit card could lead to more opportunity for "rip off" than a credit card. Most credit cards have policies in place where if your number is lost or stolen you're not responsible for the charges. With a debit card, the money comes right out of your bank account and it's a lot harder to get your money back. Yes, some sites charge credit card fees for booking. If it's that bothersome, choose a site that doesn't charge a fee. Thankfully there are tons of sites these days where you can compare and get the best price.

Re: Visa Debit in Switzerland?

I guess the "rip off" in this case refers to how the airline's payment system recognises the card.

If the system sais "Visa Debit" some fees are waved, while a "Credit Card" attracts certain fees for the end-user.

And this is not something you can select from a drop down, it depends entirely on what the systems makes of your card number.

Re: Visa Debit in Switzerland?

You can get a MasterCard Prepaid from some banks. However, it behaves like a standard MasterCard -- even though you pay in advance, the same fees apply. When you are paying a plane ticket, for example, they rip you off. MasterCard Debit doesn't work that way, but you can't get hold of one in Switzerland as far as I know. Too bad.

I use a Postfinance card for this. These generally avoid cc fees...

Re: Visa Debit in Switzerland?

Switzerland is still in the banking middle ages, people cannot even understand why you need a visa debit card.

If you are coming from the UK where you were spoilt for choice you'll find very few products here to match your needs.

There is no visa debit as you know it right now.

Yep! I still can't believe that Switzerland doesn't have debit cards that can be used for online purchases! Crazy! But they don't you can only use credit cards online in Switzerland.

Re: Visa Debit in Switzerland?

Hi,

really in the dark ages ? Compared to the UK the banking system has has moved much faster. No cheques here and they still have not been able to get rid of them in the UK. Multimats have been here for years. Being able to easily pay in money in CHF and Euros at the ATM has been available here for years. No stupid putting money in an envelope.

Also the Maestro which used to be the EC card has been available here for years. I have always found the banks better than the UK. Also they don't rip people off with incredibly high interest rates which they do in the UK.

The only reason why Visa debit cards (V Pay or electron) are useful is because of the absurd fees some sites charge but apart from that I have never seen much use. It is just a different account you can reconcile at the end of the money.

Have fun
Martin

All documentation has the name and direct number of my contact at the ZKB who actually answers her phone.

Ever tried phoning Lloyds UK branch? You end up in India...
