Health care costs tax deductible Vaud?

Hi,

I have a question completing my first VaudTax return using their software.

My question is if health insurance premiums are tax delectable? My understanding health care costs are deductible if they are greater than 5% of your income. However code 710 of the form to enter bills only has the following options:

Médecin
Dentiste
Pharmacie
Hopital
Clinque
EMS
Divers

For entering a bill suggesting this form is just for extra costs over the premiums. Can anybody explain?

To put this in context taking into account our insurance premiums our health care costs are about 9% of our income.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

Re: Health care costs tax deductible Vaud?

You can deduct the costs you've paid yourself for medical treatments, in other words whatever you've been left to pay after the insurance has paid its part. Not insurance premiums, which are partially deductible elsewhere.
Do note that for the cantonal (and communal taxes) the medical costs are only deductible if they exceed 5% of the taxable income, whilst the totality of the costs are deductible for federal income tax (IFD). It's therefore worth the hassle of filling in all your excess medical costs, even if you get nothing from the canton, you will on the federal tax.
