Best way to pay taxes ? ( C-permit )

Hi all,

I was wondering what your opinion is on the best way to pay your taxes when you have a C-permit ?

We do have a tax accountant, and we will be asking him, but I was just wondering how other people do it.

I know you can pay all at once , monthly or a few times a year and that you do get a better interest rate if you pay early.

If you pay all at once, when do you do it ? Beginning of the year or end of the year ?

Does it matter how you pay it ?

Thanks,
TheLaughingCow

Re: Best way to pay taxes ? ( C-permit )

I pay in the beginning of the year, depending on my cash flow. Iīll normally try to have it all done by June. But that is how I prefer to do it.

You can pay in monthly, all in one go, wait for the bill, itīs up to you.

Here you have the only tax office (at least in my experience) that sends you a letter and asks you to stop paying :-)

Being that they pay interest which is tax free, pay in advance & more than required will pay off. You can ask for repayment of everything at any time before the final amount is agreed.

@ Fatmanfilms - That's good to know, because I was also wondering what happens if you pay it all at once at the beginning of the year, and then you have to move out of the country ?

You file a return and claim back the excess, I imagine.

It all depends on your canton how worthwile it is and how much you gain by paying earlier.

Mittelland? Aargau?

Payment deadline is October 31st. Anything paid before that is awarded with an interest of 0.1%. Everything not paid at this time is penalized with an interest of 5.1%. Everything paid to much is awarded with 0.1% (This part is in canton Aargau subject to income tax).

And unlike Zurich where the first bill is just a payment suggestion (Zahlungsempfehlung) the canton Aargau sends you a provisional bill (Provisorische Rechnung) which you should pay. If it is too high or too low you have to contact your communes tax office to get a new bill.

Re: Best way to pay taxes ? ( C-permit )

Our tax advisor advised us to pay in advance what she estimates it to be a d if we have overpaid they refund with interest. Throughout the year put an amount monthly aside and this will make it (relatively) painless next year.

Edit this is Canton jura

Exactly what I do. I use our PostFinance account and put a set amount each month into it - slightly more than what my payment slips say I need to pay - and then make the payments from that account. I get 9 commune/cantonal invoices a year (May to January) and I also get 6 blank Federal ones along with a note of the estimate and what the monthly figure is and I pay those any 6 months I like. The bit extra going into the account each month also acts as an emergency fund if needed for things like downpayment on a new car, vet bills, paying any extra tax if we've underpaid, etc. With a standing order at our bank it's easy to change the amount transferred to PostFinance, temporarily stop the payments if I think the account doesn't need topping up, etc.

And yes jamon8, ask your cantonal tax office for a payment slip.

Not sure what you want to ask? Tax at source is not for C permits

Re: Best way to pay taxes ? ( C-permit )

C permit holders don't pay tax at source so you need to be sure to put sufficient money aside to pay your taxes when you've filled in your tax return. The employer has nothing to do with this, it's up to you to make sure you have the funds to pay your taxes.

Yes sorry for that. Well so I passed through permit b on permit c. I know that in your permit b your employer pays the tax office for you, keeps you from your salary. In the permit c we pay them. so your employer gives you the difference with your salary every month properly

Re: Best way to pay taxes ? ( C-permit )

I'm going to the commune tonight to change to a C .. (they invited me to come in with the paperwork)

And I'm so crap with taxes etc that it should be fun times ahead. Well I'll likely get somebody to do it. For example I don't even know which employer deductions will stop and and which won't etc . Like I have probably at least 5 deductions on my payslip, will they all stop? Will I be 5k per month better off until the bill comes??
Nothing like learning stuff at the last minute.

only your withholding tax will stop. AHV etc will continue.
as a ball-park figure, transfer the amount you pay on tax at source to a separate bank account (don't forget bonus payments as they are higher taxed).

So I have an entry helpfully called "withholding tax" .. I guess logically that stops as a deduction and I pay it separately.. All of the other deductions remain, yeah looking at them, pension etc

Ok i think i got the hang of it now, easy stuff

Why not contact your local tax office and see if someone can go through the forms with you? If your tax situation isn't complicated you can do it yourself fairly easily. Once you know what goes where on the forms you simply use the previous year as the template for the next. I managed to work out how to do ours myself with a bit of translation work on the relevant sections. Now keep it as a spreadsheet, change the figures as needed there and then transfer that info onto the paper forms.

Also as the tax rate could be different from what you now pay on a B permit. I checked with the tax office, they told me what I could approximately expect to pay on taxes.
