transfer UK state pension contribution to Switzerland

Hello,

I came to Switzerland very recently from the U.K. .In the U.K. I made N.I. contributions. A part of NI contributions are allocated for public healthcare and another part is allocated for pensions.

The U.K. has a pay as you go public pension system, so this is not about a transferring assets from a defined contribution fund (like a U.K. private pension fund). From my understanding Pillar 1 functions in a similar way.

My question is how can I transfer the credits/years of contributions from the U.K. to Switzerland? I know that e.g. this is possible within the EU (to transfer credits from one country to another).

The U.K. is still in the EU (though on its way out) and Switzerland has many bilateral agreements with the EU, would someone know if the above is possible? if so, what is the process that should be followed?

Best,
K

Point of order, perhaps a little pendantic, but this is what successive UK governments would like you to believe. In fact, NI contributions - employers' and employees' - go into the same general tax pot as income tax.

No that is not the case. For the moment it is possible to have your UK contributions taken into account in calculating your maximum pension, should you fail to qualify for a full pension in any jurisdiction. See the pension website of any member state for details of how it is done.

Given the current situation and the fact that the U.K. allows on going voluntary contributions it is worth investigating this option.

Re: transfer UK state pension contribution to Switzerland

Your UK state pension will be frozen until you reach pensionable age. You will start another state pension in Switzerland (AHV 1st column).

When you reach pensionable age (about 80 if you are in your 20s now) you will draw two pensions both paid either in £s in the UK or CHF here.

Important: you should ask the UK people for a projection of your pension and whether a contribution limp sum top up is worthwhile...

Thanks for this, which government agency should I be contacting about projections/a contribution lump sum?

Generally when you leave the UK and advise the authorities, they move you from your previous tax and Social Security office to an overseas one. The address I have is:

Newcastle Pension Centre
The Pension Service 11
Mail Handling Site A
Wolverhampton
WV98 1LW England.

email:
tvp.internationalqueries@dwp.gsi.gov.uk

Re: transfer UK state pension contribution to Switzerland

Hello everybody,

I'm in a similar situation and I've contacted HMRC that has told me exactly this, with the addition that you need to have paid contributions for at least 10 years in UK to qualify for state pension. I haven't and still it is unclear to me if I have completely lost those contributions.

Best regards,
Marco

Check if you are eligible to make voluntary payments to make up the difference.

HMRC told me that is the option I have. Is it the only one?
