Re: I am taxed at source. Why did I receive a Steuererklärung?

Use the software, it is much better than the paper form. Inside, you can define the time range. I declared last year in canton AG, in the SW, there was even a field you could say you changed from B permit to C

AG: EasyTax
ZH: PrivateTax

Two different programs. The ZH Program is like the paper version on the screen.

Really? Mine only looks like the paper version when finished, not when I am completing it. It skips all the parts I do not need, which is practical

Note: If make a certain amount of transactions w/o a minimum hold period the gain is treaded and taxed as income.
Sorry no English version:
https://www.estv.admin.ch/dam/estv/d...6-D-2012-d.pdf

In short: Hold period of at least 6 months, total trade volume is less than 5 times of total share value, shares not financed by loans, gain from trades is less than 50% of total income.
It's the opposite way around. If you satisfy all those conditions, you're guaranteed to not be taxed on the capital gains.

If you fail any condition, tax office is free to decide on a case by case basis. If they find you guilty of gewerbsmässiger wertschriftenhandel, you'll pay corporate tax rate on the gains and also about 10% social AHV thing.

Re: I am taxed at source. Why did I receive a Steuererklärung?

I went to the Steueramt today to try to get my tax return finalized. The lady I talked to spoke fairly good english, however something she said surprised me. She said that the taxes calculated by the Steuererlkärung are in ADDITION to any taxes already withheld from my paycheck. Is this correct, or did I simply misunderstand her?

Re: I am taxed at source. Why did I receive a Steuererklärung?

You misunderstood. They will calculate the entire amount of tax you have to pay, deduct what you've already paid and then either bill you for the remainder (the most likely outcome) or credit you with a surplus (not so likely).

Re: I am taxed at source. Why did I receive a Steuererklärung?

You won't be double taxed.

In case of a "nachträgliche Veranlagung", whatever was deducted at source will be treated as a prepayment towards your final tax liability. You'll either get some refund or receive a bill for the difference.

There's also "ergänzende Veranalagung", for in case you're not qualified to file normal tax declaration but have significant untaxed side sources of income. There the extra tax should be in addition to tax at source, but computed on the side income.

Re: I am taxed at source. Why did I receive a Steuererklärung?

Some quick questions on top of this:

It seems one of the forms I need is proof of payment into AHV/IV. Anyone know where I can get this form?

My wife transferred savings of approx 50K to CH during 2016. I guess will have to mention this....

Never needed to myself, if your self employed then you need a certificate from the AHV

Nothing to mention, other than any balances in accounts world wide. I don't think 50k +/- even would get noticed in CH, it's the cost of a car, watch or ring in CH.

You mean Pillar 3? If you have paid in you should have received a new calculation of your pension and a confirmation on the amount paid in
