Poll: Average Monthly Expenses

My wife is concerned about the cost of living in Geneva vs the salary posted for the position she is applying for. I am wondering what others here spend on average per month for the following categories. I have found a few sites online that show cost of living comparisons, but I would like to hear from the fine folks here.

Family size (number of adults and children)
Food and dining:
Utilities:
Transportation (fuel, public transport):
General Shopping (home goods, clothing, school supplies, etc..):
Taxes (not including income taxes):

Thanks for the help!

Dan

Calculate the cost of living in Fairfield or Westport, and add 50%.

Re: Poll: Average Monthly Expenses

You haven't specified the size of your family and whether you have children or not will influence your costs significantly.

In Geneva housing and health insurance will make a major difference. Heath premiums are the highest in all of Switzerland so you're looking at CHF 450/adult for the basic insurance with CHF 300 deductible or some CHF 320/adult if you go for CHF 2000 deductible and mandatory family doctor. Children under 18 would be around CHF120/month.

If you're unlucky enough to need a 3-bedroom apartment or even a townhouse (which French-speaking Swiss call 'villa' for some strange reason) then your monthly rental costs are going to be CHF 3700-5000, usually with heating costs included.

Cable (TV+internet) and mobile phones will set you back CHF 150-250/month, depending on how spoiled you are for internet speed.
Electricity will come to some CHF 150/month for a 3-bedroom apt.

Public transportation pass is around CHF 650/year.
Car insurance in Geneva is also rather pricey (supposedly a lot of frontalier youth vandalizing vehicles belonging to decent hard-working Swiss and expat population), CHF 1200+/year for a full casco on a family-sized station wagon.

You should also budget another CHF 200-400/year for various insurances (household contents, personal liability) and car tax.

Child care is awfully expensive and subsidised places are simply not available even if you qualify (subsidised daycare is CHF 800/month, private will cost 2000+/month)

I actually kept a track of expenses over a 10-year period in Geneva and for a family of 4 with 2 school-age children under 18 we were spending CHF 9500/month in 2006 (of which 4300 for housing and 600 for car payments), up to CHF 11800/month in 2015 as the kids started paying adult health insurance rate and eating adult-size meals (with 4800 for housing housing and still the same car costs). This did include 2-3 week summer vacations in Europe and short trips to Italy or Cote d'Azur every 2-3 months. On the other hand, restaurant outings in Switzerland were almost non-existent.

Chf 10k is EXTREMELY expensive for a family of four, it would be considerably less i think if you spoke French and intergrated a bit.

Chf 4'300.-- for housing is expensive

Same price for a loaf of bread in whatever language you buy it. No discounts on clothing either if you order in French. What makes you conclude that we speak no French and weren't integrated?

Not for 130 m2 in Geneva where the vacancy rate is 0.2%. We rented all three places we lived in while they were still under construction and each one of them had the rent increased after we left. The house next to us that only had 1 additional small room was already CHF 5000/month.

Family size (2 adults, two children, 1 is a teenage)
Food and dining (mix of french and Swiss supermarkets) about 1,400 per month.

Medical Insurance 1,200 per month, zero excess for the girls. Probably 50 a month in bills not reimbursed. 150 a year for other insurances.

Rent 3-bed apartment, including charges and parking box is CHF 3k a month. We usually get back CHF 1k a year for the charges.

Car for my wife (CHF 1,400 per year insurance with max no claims discount, 340 a year tax, 40 for vignette, 1440 a year fuel, 200 service). We bought the car new

Scooter for me (200 a year insurance, 700 a year gas, 200 service) Plus annual TPG pass in bad weather is 500 (reimbursed by my employer).

Internet and TV is 100 bucks a month with swisscom.

Mobile phone for my wife and daughter is CHF 45 each with all the data they can use. My phone is from my employer.

We do spend money on ski lessons / horse riding for the girls and they also have a tutor a couple of times a week.

Re: Poll: Average Monthly Expenses

Welcome to the Forum.

If you want info on cost of living, there's loads of info here. Here are some threads that I think cover the topic nicely, including links and examples of actual expenses. The first one is a bit old, but quite comprehensive and worth a look. The second is more recent:

Cost of living - help needed to get it right

Cost of living in Switzerland-with examples

There are more than 100 threads that talk about cost of living. Some might be relevant to you and others not, but do have a read through the more recent ones. There's a LOT of good advice in there, you just have to do a little of the leg (er, reading) work yourself:

http://www.englishforum.ch/search2.php?q=cost+of+living

Hopefully you can compare your own current costs and lifestyle using some of this info, and determine whether the move is for you and your family.

You will see many posts talk about Zurich, but you can expect Geneva is similar or even more for rent, depending on where you want to live. You can also take a look at threads from this modified search: https://www.englishforum.ch/search2....+living+geneva

Re: Poll: Average Monthly Expenses

I gave you the answer.

Geneva isn't a cheap-ass place like New Haven, more like Westport, Fairfield, Darien, or Greenwich (etc).

Just 50% more expensive.

Yep, my home stomping ground.

No wonder that I don't find it expensive here.

Tom

Quite simply because you say your family of 4 need Chf 9'500.-- per month to live. This is well above the average salary in Switzerland, about 50% over, so you must be doing something wrong

My apologies if you have integrated and speak French, if this is the case, something is definitely wrong

Yes, Geneva cost of living is definitely wrong and it's not exactly a place crowded with people on average Swiss salaries
Unless you signed the rental contract for a 150 m2 5-bed apartment within the spitting distance of the cathedral for CHF 1300/month back in 1987 (as someone I know did)

Well what do you expect, you certainly chose one of the more expensive areas to live if !

Re: Poll: Average Monthly Expenses

On most things I think HIAQ's post is more realistic than TheUser's.... we spent similar amounts when living as a family in Geneva; and we were basically four adults in the last couple of years.

The main factor that will vary is housing.... finding a place in Geneva can be quite difficult, a house way out in the sticks is obviously going to easier to find; but will also cost a lot more than, an apartment within easy commuting distance of the centre.
Medical insurance is on the higher end of the swiss scale, there's plenty of advice on the forum about which type of contract to chose if you search... but 450-500 per month with a 300 francs franchise is probably a good starting point.

Car(s) would be your third variable. Do you actually need one, two? Consider if it's possible to not have one, but use public transport during the week and maybe hire one occasionally for trips. Depending on where your wife's job is of course.... is parking at work provided? If not then that might be a problem; places avaliable around the city for all-day parking are rarer than hens teeth.

Re: Poll: Average Monthly Expenses

If it helps, we spend around 4-5K a month for a family of 4 (2 kids below 18) excluding rent and with most shopping for food done in France. Furniture etc are bought in Geneva as I am too lazy to sort out the taxes at the border.

I am following this with interest for my understanding based on BIPE the amount is calculated based on salary? I did not realize there was a flat rate for subsidized daycare?

It varies, I think there is a fixed rate but that's before your combined income(s) are taken into consideration. It also will depend on if the crèche/garderie, etc. is State subsidised or totally private.

These links might help.

Sorry it is not in English, but if you go to this page you will see a series of PDFs of suggested budgets based on salary ranges.
