120Kchf in Zurich with family and dog... Enough??

Hi I'm planning to relocate to Zurich from Spain and I'm wondering if a salary of 120000chf is enough to substation myself, my non working wife, our 1,5 years old daughter and our Labrador.

Any idea on how much will be the monthly costs compared to the net salary?

Thanks, Lorenzo.

I'm sure the search function will answer all your questions, as it gets asked... a lot, every week... and the answers are piece of string dependant

You'll be earning almost double the national average, you'll be very comfortable.

I think one can have a pretty decent living with this number. No luxury for sure though.

Can only confirm other posters - use the search function (and maybe formatting of your salary to include standard CHF formatting e.g. 100'000 per year exclusive / inclusive of tax deductions).

Then happy to help.

Otherwise we just may think you are a Kardashian - earning at least this per day - and won't bother with the free advice ;-)

You will have to leave the dog behind: if he bites anyone you will be bankrupt.

But, just specific to moving to Switzerland, and back to your general question:

Well you'll probably survive regardless, and secondly, it won't be nearly as much as you think it is.

Have you got a job offer in Zurich? Because as you speak Italian you'd do better to move to Ticino canton if you're planning to set up your own business. At least you'll be able to speak the language there.

The offer I got is for Zurich and unfortunately I still don't get why 120KCHF wouldn't be enough t.b.h. and in the other 'similar' post I can only see very rough figures of someone willing to have an housemaid etc.. obviously I'm not looking to have a limousine with private driver since the first day but from what I got here so far, looks like I won't even survive with more than 8K euro monthly, I think I'm missing something in my calculations...

You will survive very well off 120,000 chf.

Put it this way, I wish we had half of that!

Rubbish. Plenty of people thriving in Zürich without German.

someone also mentioned me that live in the Zug canton will make a difference because taxes are much lower there, and doesn't look that far from Zurich only 30 mins by train

Plus traveling from home to station and station to work, allow an hour. The cost would probably eat up most if not all of the saving. Really, with that salary with no kids you will be fine.

I live in a low tax canton, Schwyz. Yes, that's half an hour from Zurich and Zug is the same. You can save some costs, but if I am brutally honest: 120k CHF a year is a decent salary to live on. It's probably not so high though that the tax savings are worth the commute.

Simple example: if you live with a family of three in Zug (the city) instead of Zürich will you save 8242 CHF income tax. You can calculate this here: https://en.comparis.ch/steuern/steue...n-im-vergleich

Since you then need to commute do you need a train ticket. The 2nd class GA for all trains in CH costs 3860 CHF per person. Rents are also higher in Zug, especially if the property is close to the station. If you pay 300 CHF a month more than in Zürich are your savings gone... and your wife would sit in some small town instead of Zurich...

Simply put: The tax saving makes sense for higher income and or double earning families.

120K is fine. Change your dining habits so that you eat and drink out a lot less than you would in Spain, and you'll have a good and potentially healthier life here in Switzerland.

Salaries have come down over the last two or three years, so those members saying you can't live well enough on that salary are either lying, are totally crap at handling their finances or, most likely, simply earn more and have never needed to think about how to spend wisely.
