Took a quick look at this.

You can't buy it with cash, you have to have BTC or ETH and swap that to get IOT.

So you can't sell it for cash either. You have to sell it for another crypto. Meaning, even if you gain on IOT your margin will depend on the converted crypo you will get. 2 factors will be in play. Am I right?
Not an expert on the cryptocurrencies - actually my status is more of a curious at this stage - but that makes sense.

Yes. I bought IOTA on Bitfinex, using ETH that I had transferred from Coinbase.

The transfer from Coinbase to Bitfinex took minutes.

Buying IOTA took about an hour, because I set my buy price at 10% below the then market price of $0.37.

The killer question.

I leave it on the exchange. Not found a viable wallet solution yet.

Better not use any until they sort out the major wallet issues (new version should be out soon).

Oops, I just bought a Ledger Nano S for ZappaJr for Christmas... I'm playing catch up as a curious onlooker here. What are these issues of which you speak?

For which currencies, FrankZ? For BTC and ETH, at least, the Ledger Nano S should be good -- or are there issues of which I'm not aware?

We're good then - it's just for those AFAIK. What a relief. It's a pretty wild ride, even as a spectator .

Last week he invested in the crypto-currency Ethereum. He bought it at 90 USD and its price today is USD 160. It's certainly volatile, at one point reaching USD 200.
And here we are just a few months later. Teacher's happy I guess?

Ahoy FrankZ

Ledger Nano is worth it's money in gold, so to speak. There has been 1 confirmed "hack" so far, but what people don't mention when spreading that news is - the hacker had physical access to the device as well.

Long as you know where your Ledger is and you don't post your personal information out on the WWW, you'll be safe.

And if you want to get max security, send your cryptos to your wallet address and create a paper wallet (or, that's a new fad - a steel wallet). Basically you get your private and public keys on a steel plate, and then you put that plate in a safe. Tad of an overkill, but secure is secure

but to have that "wallet", is it a mandatory step? or we can keep the Ethereum on Bity? (if/when i buy, it will not be a huge amount )
But isn't that good?

If I see, that the platform is safe (regulated, licensed) along with easy to use and offering the right currencies for me, I'd much rather send cash via my bank account / SEPA, that rely on other methods like Credit-cards, paypal ect.

I've been working in the Online-Gambling sector for a few years, and man.... soooo many complaints & refunds because of hacks, "hacks", refunds, lost accounts and whatnot.

Just my 2 cents. I rather pay my FIAT via my bank account, than risk my credit-card (not to mention the higher deposit fees )

My french teacher is a retired teacher in his 70's. He's comfortable taking some financial risks with a portion of his savings. If he lost the money, he'd be upset, but not hurt.

Does anyone on here have any experience with Ethereum, or invested in it themselves. How did you decide to invest in crypto-currencies?

Could you share your wisdom with us all.
Up 15 x in four years, wait 'til the no-coiners catch on.

I joined relatively early so there was enough juice to be squeezed out but let’s hope it won’t take that long for crypto marketplace to make a spectacular come back.

Good point. The unique property of bitcoin is supposed to be limited supply, which makes it similar to gold. But you can produce countless bitcoin clones, and how are they not a bitcoin alternative? IMO gold, bitcoin, ethereum, ripple are fighting for the same money.

BTW gold is also not a productive asset. Your arguments could be as well used against investing in gold. Just saying
BTW gold is a rare physical earth element that can be manmade in a nuclear reactor.
Aside from jewelry it is used in industry, electronics and medicine and is quite a productive asset.
Just saying!

„ Basically you get your private and public keys on a steel plate“

Seems very safe. Is it done by robot in a controlled 3D printer where then a reliable man picks the stamped steel plates and put them in two different packages? After copying them, for his own safety of course!

We will see, 5 years down the line …
