Tax when married living in 2 different cantons

Hi All

Current situation:
We are married and we leave in Canton Zürich
We are expecting a baby in December
In December, I will move to Canton Schwyz (I will de-register from Canton ZH) and my wife and the baby will still stay in Canton ZH until Feb 2018.

Questions
- Where do I and my family pay the tax for 2017 ?
- Do we split the taxes between the two Cantons?

Thanks a lot for your support
M.

Re: Tax when married living in 2 different cantons

Depends. Are you separating for good or just will be working in SZ and constantly visiting them in ZH? In the latter case it's not unlikely that you both will be taxed in ZH.

Usually you are taxed where your 'center of life' is. Since your wife and family will stay in ZH and presumably you will travel there for the weekend (not the other way), you'll pay in Zurich.

travel from Schwyz to Zurich every weekend?
sounds more like a lame tax scheme.

Indeed lame, as that way you pay higher taxes!

Also, do your permits allow you to live apart?

If you are returning to ZH each weekend, you shouldn't de-register in any case.
