Safe to give Swiss bank details?

Yet another one from the "I'm sure this is the case but I'm paranoid and need to double and triple check" annals.

I recently got a letter from my landlord to say they've done calculations of the water and heating for the past 2 years (!!!!) and it turns out they owe me a bit over 100 francs as a result of this. Yay.

They also say to provide them with my bank details for this....

Now....As I've grown up...the idea of emailing my bank details to someone is an insane security risk. Its just not something that is done.
However I am told that in Switzerland this is no trouble. That if someone gets hold of your bank card they can't actually take any money from you, only give you money.

The question then; is it true that giving away your bank details in Switzerland is something that can be done so liberally?
That the way the system is setup means money cannot be taken, only given?
Certainly it sort of makes logical sense considering online shopping is impossible with Swiss bank cards, nonetheless, it seems very curious.

Re: Safe to give Swiss bank details?

It's pretty safe, legally they can't do anything with it other than put money in. Even asking for a balance would be totally out of line, bank would face criminal sanctions for violating bank secrecy.

And then it's your landlord, he already has far more sensitive PII on you anyway - date of birth, signature sample, maybe you even gave away an ID copy with the application. The source account from which you pay rent can also be visible to him in some circumstances.

Of course, a small risk of identity theft cannot be completely ruled out, it could come even from bank's own employees, but there would be a trace of where the money went and the bank potentially could be held liable for negligence

Re: Safe to give Swiss bank details?

It's not that it is the regie that concerns me, rather the prospect of emailing bank card details.
Also I'm wondering more generally about sharing these details.

Why would you email bank card details?

It's perfectly normal here.

The only details they need are your IBAN.

Which consists of your country of residence, bank, branch, and your account number.

However I doubt that any swiss bank would react for a request for funds with only the IBAN. Even a well forged letter w/signature is going to be checked if that is not the normal way you instruct them.

So even if someone gleens the IBAN from an intercepted email, they really cannot do anything with it.

Every time a transaction gets processed via SWIFT or SEPA your details are attached... your email will contain nothing more than that.

I would suggest you sign up for the next presentation of this course: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/...cyber-security

The IBAN does not show your country of residence, just where the account is located.

Why?? What you wrote was incorrect, as FMF said, the IBAN shows where the account is located, not where you live

I hope Clarkson kept the direct debit going!
But yes. It's out of this British pov that I find the Swiss way unusual. In the UK you do not share your bank details just like that.

If you pay by cheque all the details of your Bank are shown.

Why not just deal in cash, it works very well in CH

Or Malta where an internet transaction costs 4 euros above 1000 euro & 1 euro below. Cheques are free & postage is 26 cents so hardly surprising everything is paid by cheque.

US cheques are very easy to handle, just scan & I can pay then into my account in the US.

It does it the transfer is not to the same Bank, BOV, HSBC, & BANIF all charge. Interestingly a travel agent had 3 different accounts at 3 banks to get round this, a Notary had BOV & HSBC.

Deposits can attract fees as well......

Yes it does if not to the same bank.

Maltese banks do not acknowledge each others existence unless through gritted teeth. Whether SEPA transfers, or even using an ATM (slightly better now though)

I also have personal experience of BoV telling me they will not accept a direct debit from HSBC for a home loan.
