Wealth tax declaration - Permit B -> Full Declaration

Hi all,

This has been covered before, I've read a number of posts but I'm after some advice for my specific case if anybody can help.

I came here in 2014 to Neuchatel, on Permit B and earning less than 120K. I did a 'simplified' declaration, only because I paid into a 3rd pillar pension. I gave my bank account statements (some UK, some Switzerland) to my tax advisor at the time, who did not submit to tax authorities (below threshold).

In 2015, I filled the simplified tax return again myself, without declaring anything. My wealth was approaching the declaration 'threshold' which I believe is around 100k CHF in Neuchatel? I owned stocks but did not declare anything (income or wealth).

For 2016 I again didn't declare (just pillar 3a), but may have been over the threshold...

Now in 2017 I will likely have to do a full declaration due to salary increase. I would like to declare my accounts but am a bit worried that the previous years will be a problem. I'm not sure though, as I was not automatically obliged to fill the full declaration.

If anybody could give any advice or tips I would appreciate it :)

Thanks

Re: Wealth tax declaration - Permit B -> Full Declaration

Does anybody have any experience in this that they could share?

In a nutshell:

Been on permit B, <120k since coming here, did not declare anything, just simplified tax form. I may have been over 'wealth threshold' last year but I didn't find any official limit...

This year I'll have to declare (>120k). I plan to declare everything. Will they be asking me about the previous years when I didn't declare? Anything to worry about?

Thankyou for any help!

Are you sure you need to declare anything? You just decided to do it yourself?

I live in VD, work in GE.. B permit, over 120k, tax at source.. I asked the tax people in both GE and VD if i need to do anything and both said no.

My 5 years is nearly up though, might be changing to a C in a couple of months.. So all change then.

No, I'm not sure they will send me the full declaration stuff. I'm just assuming that because I will be >120k in income.

I'm just thinking though, if I do not declare anything again, will I not get into trouble later when I finally declare? Will they not ask 'Why didn't you pay wealth & income tax on this for the past 4 years?'

From the neuchatel tax site (but I have no idea what 'as appropriate' means... there is no stated threshold):

The people of foreign nationality and have not an establishment permit (C permit) are subject to the withholding tax on wages and income acquired as compensation for this last (unemployment or illness, accident or) disability less than 100%).

These same people have the legal obligation to declare to the tax authority, as appropriate, their wealth and income that are not subject to the withholding tax. This is particularly the case for:

Fortune and income from self-employment;

Fortune and income of bank assets (gains of lottery and other games of chance, securities, accounts, etc.);

Fortune and real estate income;

Retirement pensions;

Disability in the case of incapacity for work pension equal to 100%;

Etc.

How much are you worth? :D

Did you check how much wealth tax you actually have to pay?
Pillar 2 and 3 do not count and you can subtract any debt you have.

For simplicity just enter your wealth

Thanks for the link.

I tried entering 0 income and tried lots of values for 'wealth'. It appears that the wealth tax kicks in at 51,000 CHF for Neuchatel, which seems quite low.

I'm happy to declare everything this year, just concerned that I haven't declared before and if that will cause some trouble.

Re: Wealth tax declaration - Permit B -> Full Declaration

Sorry to dig up this thread again. I have a concern for my 2017 tax return.

In 2017, I earned over the 120k threshold for the first time. I am taxed at source until 2019 (C-permit).

Will the authorities request that I fill a full declaration if needed, or should I request to fill a full declaration? (I have stock market assets).

Is it required that I make this request?

Thanks for any help!

They will ask you, unless your a multi millionaire they won't care as you missed tax will be less than the cost of a meal.

Thanks fatmanfilms for your response.

I contacted the tax office requesting to fill a tax return due to my income above 120k for 2017. They responded and told me they'll send me the tax return next month... time for the fun of tax returns :O

Hi all,

I requested the full tax declaration as explained above^^

I didn't receive any documents yet. Does anyone know when I should expect to receive them?

Thanks

When the tax office is ready, as your not on a C permit it needs someone to think about it. You might get 2 next year when you get your C.

Thanks a lot!

I paid into my 2nd and 3rd pillar pensions in 2017...do you think I need to submit the partial declaration now for 2017, as I have been the last few years? I wouldn't want to miss out on getting my tax back on those..

Cheers

Hello,

Sorry for the off topic:

1.How do you declare your tax only for the 3rd pillar? I have a B permit and payment the 3rd pillar in 2017.

2. Currently I receive >120K however I did not receive any letter to do my taxes. Should I call them?

I live in Zurich.

Thanks,

There is a software and an online version:

I do not think there is an English one though.

1. Whatever deductions (3rd pillar, childcare, health care costs etc) that you want to make, you should do in the software in the link I gave above. 3rd Pillar is called "3.Säule" in German. There are also accountants (Treuhand) who do your tax returns for about 100 - 150 CHF. Make sure you agree on the fee beforehand though, there was someone here recently who got charged an arm and a leg for it.

You should have received a Lohnausweiss from your employer about how much you make a year. Use that to fill out your form.

2. We always received a form automatically but if you have not received one yet, I guess you can give them a call. Anyone with earnings > 120K needs to fill out a tax declaration but you can still fill out a declaration if you have anything to deduct.

The deadline is 31.03.2018 but it can be extended here:

https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/fd/de/i...streckung.html
I suspect since you did not receive the forms you do not have the document id required in which case it might be best to give them a call.

Ask for an accountant to help you with your taxes at your current bank, the fees they charge for this service are very reasonable. Actually, it's a service they usually advertise themselves, along with investment consulting.

Thanks,

I am in the same situation than you about >120K for the first time. I have been recently to the Tax Office of the City of Zurich, they told me that I should wait for the letter without requesting anything special. Firstly Tax Office of Zurich Kanton needs to inform Zurich City and only then they will send the letter with the access code.
