| | As a UN consultant am I exempt of paying income taxes?
Hi all,
After reviewing several forums/webs in the internet, I'm still unclear whether as a UN consultant with a yearly income lower than 120.000CHF in Geneva (in 2016) I should declare my revenues and do a tax return?
Any advice will be welcome!
Thanks

It seems you are, but this may depend on your permit since this only mentions C and B permit holders while most NGO staff would have other types. http://www.cagi.ch/en/ngo/taxation/ngo-s-employees.php
Use the e-mail address to be sure. |

Confirmed here.
" 6.1. Consultants
Foreign nationals who are not staff members and who are hired by the international organisations as consultants are issued a type “H” legitimation card provided that the duration of their contract is equal to at least three weeks. Those who are hired for less than three weeks do not receive a legitimation card but the international organisation must register them with the Swiss Mission.
Foreign nationals already residing in Switzerland at the time they are hired and who possess a permit are not issued a legitimation card, and the international organisation does not need to register them at the Swiss Mission. The same applies to Swiss nationals.
The above are subject to Swiss law, in particular, legislation covering social security and taxation." https://www.eda.admin.ch/content/dam...ly-2015_EN.pdf | This user would like to thank Medea Fleecestealer for this useful post: | |

No, you are not. In Germany, consultants must even pre pay income taxes.
I can tell from my own exerience as former UN consultant in Bonn.

they provide consultants with Annex I where it states you must deal with all tax issues on your own.

And unfortunately HR in my case did not provide any information about taxes.... also why would they? If everyone knew about taxes they would have to increase their fees that are extremely low in a UN organization I used to work for...
Perhaps UN in Geneva do it differently

wow!
if people are lucky they will be advised. but otherwise,
here is an excerpt from that famous annex I
"The United Nations shall have no liability for taxes, duty or other similar charges payable by the contractor in respect of any amounts paid to the contractor under the contract, and the contractor acknowledges that the United Nations will not issue any statements of earnings to the contractor in respect of any such payments.
good luck to future UN consultants! |

Thanks for all your comments.
I'm afraid it has proven difficult to get any answers from the HR department. It seems they do not want to take any responsibility. The message is that it it us to each consultant to investigate the matter and decide what to do.
