How to correctly register a move between cantons around year-end

We're moving from Kt. ZH to Kt. SO around December/Jan. The rental contract of the old house is expiring on the 31st of December and the purchase date of the property in SO will be probably 1 November, but some renovations will be done first. The registration in SO will need to be in 2018, otherwise my understanding is we will pay all of 2017 taxes in SO (much higher).

Is deregistering late Dec and registering early Jan going to work or will I need to deregister and register in SO in early Jan?

You don't have to de-register and re-register on the exact day you move, as long as it is within a few days. All things being equal, I would make sure you are resident on 31 December in the place with the lowest taxes and make your move official either before or after that date accordingly. In any case all these offices are going to be closed on and around New Year.

Registering with the gemeinde and owning a property are independent of each other. Both gemeinde want your taxes, but you will be considered resident and be paying where you figure as resident on Dec 31st, as mentioned by catandmouse. If you have kids you have to arrange their schooling a couple of months in advance. Good luck with the move!

Thanks, no kids and aware of closure around NY.

Just hope old Gemeinde will be ok with deregistration in Jan when contract expired in December.
