Just waiting for a new 12 sided bimetallic franc to make an appearance. For those of you with assets in GBP, don't forget the "round pound" stops being legal tender this coming weekend!
Won't happen.

You know the 10-Rappen piece is like it is, design and alloy, since 1879 (during certain periods other alloys are used).
20-Rappen has the same design since 1881 and same alloy since 1939.
The 5-Rappen piece has the same design since 1879 and same alloy since 1981
The 1-Franc has the same design since 1875, and same alloy since 1976.

We treat our coin design with respect.

It's strange, I have a 1 rappen coin from 1900, it does looks entirely different...

That one has the most recent design change: 1948. They were last minted 2007.

...It's a 1/2 Franc ... and as you already know a beveled edge...
5, 10 and 20 Rappen have a smooth edge ...

Hope that helps.
Why have I never noticed this before? Thank you! I always found 10 centimes and 1/2 Franc coins so easy to confuse. Not anymore!

BTW I think the term for the edge is "milled" - "beveled" is having the sharp edge taken off.

Reeded seems to be the super proper term.

Re: New 10 CHF banknote

Do any of the Bank/etc. ATMs dispense the 10 fr note?

When you ask for 200 it would be nice to get a 100, a 50, two 20s and a 10, or one 20 and three 10s, rather than just one 200.

Why?

It's not like anyplace in Switzerland has a problem breaking a 200 note (or even a 1000).

Re: New 10 CHF banknote

Why so much fuss about what’s gonna be printed on the note? Note is a note and will be spent in its due time all the same.

Q: Will SNB provide us with special ink cartridges and paper to print our own notes at home or places of choice?

A: Not that I know of. Only if they go bust and cannot afford labour to do so.

I'm not so keen on giving my kids a 200 for an ice cream when they go to the badi

Bacause if you do not know how the new one looks like you might as well be happy with my new freshly printed design
PS: Is there a second source for the ink, maybe Alibaba?

You would totally look like a cheapstake dad/mom. Think about the humilation the kids have to endure at the badi kiosk

Actually that's only a decoy truck... The real package gets transported by a Valser Wasser truck. I mean, who would assaut a water truck here in Switzerland? Actually you can see one of these trucks in the image above. They just hide the "Valser" logo while inside the area but me as a Bündner who lived in the Vals region easily recognize those trucks.

That's how all the money gets distributed in this wealthy country. Think about it. When was the last time you saw an armored car at Migros or SBB? The cash gets delivered in water bottles. Shhh big swiss secret

I had a similar thought to Corsebou... how respectful is it to scrap coins altogether?!

The 1 Rappen coin was actually last minted in 2006, and withdrawn in 2007. The 2 Rappen coin went earlier; last minted in 1974 and withdrawn in 1978.

Speaking of coins, am I the only one that fumbles like a fool with the 10, 20 and 50 rappen coins?
Nope.

Quote:

They're all so similar when you're standing at the kiosk with a queue behind you. I know the 50 has a beveled edge but in the darkest corners of my purse they all look and feel the same.

I've been here more than a decade so it's not like I'm fresh off the boat.
I feel the edge of the coins with fingertips/fingernails for the milling.

But if I'm tired or in a dimly lit place I'll simply pay with whole francs. Just like everyone else. If I'm getting a sandwich for lunch or something else I know the price of, I'll count the exact change out at my desk beforehand and put it in my back pocket.

When I lived next to a bar I'd go in when the owner was there and dump my accumulated shrapnel on him. It may surprise you, but a lot of bar and shop owners welcome small change, because otherwise they have to order it from the bank.

Buying tickets at an SBB Automat springs to mind. They have an upper limit for the change they give.

For kids / teenagers / students, it's probably quite handy being able to withdraw that last 10 or 30 francs they have in the bank.

Yes, I have seen this, but only at one of my bank's branches nearby.

My bank's cash dispenser offers a choice of "large" or "mixed" notes. It remembers your choice for your next visit, when you can simply hit the Express button to get the same selection.

Agreed, I never really knew what was printed on (before EF ). I just want to get the exchange for it.
But this time I like the bright colors they used after decades of the bland things although the only effect this had so far is me noticing that I don't own them long enough.
