Taxes: Pilot based in UK/living in Switzerland.

Hi guys first post.
Have attempted to find the answer, but struggled with a somewhat unique scenario.

I am an airline pilot flying for a large British airline based out of London Heathrow, currently on their Short haul fleet. Role requires nights away a lot (ie do not cross midnight in UK), differently to a pilot who flies for easyJet/Ryanair for instance (they are home each night).

Partner lives/works in Basel, so planning to move down in March 2018. I will therefore be living in Switzerland, and commuting to London to undertake my flying duties.

Anyone any experience with this tax situation, where I am an expat looking to pay taxes in Switzerland rather than UK. A generous estimate is I am in the UK 120 days a year, but that is fairly generous and with roster manipulation could be less than 90 days.

I understand that as I am possibly non-resident I become eligible for lump sum taxation (although Basel stadt dont allow it on canton taxes, but Fed tax can still be paid that way).

Any input greatly appreciated, or even the name of a tax specialist familiar with this situation. Would quite like to get my taxes right!!!

Lump sum taxation will have a minimum payment of 120k tax, the days of 30k tax are long gone.

I know plenty of BA long hall staff who live in Chamonix France, pilots & trolly dollies.

HMRC rules on tax residency may put the kaibosh on your plans. Have you checked with a UK tax advisor. A quick search revealed :-
https://www.baktax.com/pilots-and-aircrew
I have no connection with them, but they seem to be aware of situations like yours. Hope it's useful.

It's possible for a UK Pilot to spend less than 16 nights at midnight in the UK, I know a couple who needed to be less than 16 nights for 2 years, depending on the OP's circumstances it could be less than 46 nights at midnight.
