Need funding for MSc studies at ETH.

Dear all,

sorry if this is the wrong section.

I was admitted for MSc program in Physics at ETH Zurich.
They kindly granted me tuition waiver and a stipend of 3800CHF for the first year.
According to the ETH handbook for intl students I will need around 20000CHF per year to cover my life expenses.

So the question is how to get missing 16K? )

Anyone aware of any stipends, scholarships, assistantships, etc that could help me?
It seems like I will be allowed to work only after 6 month in Switzerland but in the handbook they do not recommend to rely on that.
Is that possible to find a company that will pay for my studies if I agree to work for it for a couple of years after I've graduated? (I heard this sometimes works in France)
Probably I should mention that I'm Belarus citizen which is not part of EU.

Will appreciate any helpful information.

Thanks,

Kirill

Re: Need funding for MSc studies at ETH.

Dear Kirill

I'm sorry I cant support you in this case. But please tell me as a student in ETHZ, what is the minimum GPA to get accepted to a program in ETHZ. My gpa is 2.8/4. I graduated in a state university in Sri Lankan. If I cant accepted with a scholarship, will it be possible to get accepted with my own funds ? please help me regarding this.

You'd think Uni's could standardise their grading wouldn't you. Every country has a different system. That GPA means nothing to me, no clue how good it is.

I believe the Sri Lankan university grading system is similar to the U.S. 4.0 system. So, if the max GPA (top marks) is 4.0, then 2.8 of 4.0 means the person is an average student, at best. So probably nowhere near high enough to get entry to the very competitive ETHZ.

I only really understand the UK system.

What I don't get is the difference between the UK and US percentage system. Surely a percentage is a percentage?

Re: Need funding for MSc studies at ETH.

No way. A percentage definitely isn't a percentage in terms of meaning. Class rank is often used for comparing internationally (top 10%, top 50%, etc.)

A typical US percentage grade is:

A 100-91%
B 90-81%
C 80-71%
D 70 - 61%
F 60% and lower

When I was in NZ the grading scale was:

A 80% - 100%
B 65% - 79%
C 50% - 64%
D 30% - 49%
E 0% - 29%

The NZ system is more logical, with a C grade falling at 50%, so it fits a standard curve better, but it's not a linear as the US system. The NZ educational standards were also lower (in my experience), which meant that it was easy for me consistently score A+ in courses, where I had much stiffer competition back in the US (mostly A's with some B's, and 2 C's in my undergraduate degree).

And then you get to grad school and the whole system changes again.

I didn't say it was impossible, but entry to ETHZ is highly competitive. It's a great school with an outstanding reputation, so loads of Swiss and foreigners alike want to go there. Why not send them an email directly and ask them if your GPA is competitive enough? All you have right now is my opinion, so it's best to get the facts straight from the source.

Re: Need funding for MSc studies at ETH.

Have you checked the admissions webpage? You need to have the equivalent of a first in your BSc, which is a GPA of 3.684.00.

The standard grading system used in schools will only give you an A for full marks and you need at least 60% to pass. At university level this becomes more flexible, some teachers will set the A at whatever the best score was in the test, others don't care if nobody gets full marks. I've even sat an exam where you needed 75% just to pass.

Funny, noticed the OP's post popping up the other day, after I had bumped one of "those" threads, and wondered if it fitted with my theory. Combined with the second post, looks as if it might.

I dunno, Reb. OP is from 2008. The second poster may be new, but he clearly knew how to use the search function, and didn't start his own thread.
