Claiming VAT?

Hi everyone,
During my upcoming holidays in South Africa im planning to do some shopping and im considering to claim VAT there at the airport.
Does anyone know, if after arrival back to Switzerland, I need to declare that (eg. somewhere at the airport)?

I live in Switzerland with permit B.
I am citizen of EU.

Cheers,
czezz

When over the amount you can import without paying Swiss taxes (CHF 300)

Re: Claiming VAT?

1. Does it mean that if I claim VAT abroad, I need to pay difference after arrival to Switzerland?
2. What if I do not claim VAT abroad? Do I still need to go and report it at the airport?

No, you pay Swiss VAT (8%)

Yes, the penalties for not doing are VAT plus up to 4x the VAT as a penalty.

Reclaiming VAT or not aboard does not play a role for importing into Switzerland and calculating Swiss VAT due. If the net value of the goods to be imported into Switzerland is above CHF 300 you must use the red exit and pay Swiss VAT. Swiss VAT is 2.5% (Food, books) or 7.8% (2018)/8%(2017) depending on type of goods.

Here all information by Swiss Customs in English:
https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home...itzerland.html

Note that you must presents the goods in ZA to reclaim ZA VAT. So do it before you check-in your bags!
