| | Tax Return
This has probably been answered multiple times, but I can't find anything...
Before filing your annual tax returns, do you get anything from the tax office? Anything at all?
I called the local tax authority (ZH), and was told I will receive forms to complete in June (I moved here in March 2017)... which seems to contradict everything else I see online....

The paper versions have unique identifiers that have to be applied in the software version. Regular submitters, usually get the forms end Jan, for submission end March but an extension to end Sept is easy to obtain. New submitters it is usually May/June, maybe with 30 days to submit, but again usually an extension to end Sept is easy to obtain.

| | | | | Thank you - that makes me feel so much better! I was freaking out that I missed the March deadline and had no idea what to do.
Thank you!

M. | | | | | Are you taxed at income or as a Swiss National?
As a CH National you would have received the tax forms months ago for the tax year 2017.
To complete it, everything is usually easy-peasy on-line nowadays. In Zürich the password and ID you need will be provided in the snail-mail you receive.
You can extend the tax declaration submission period to I believe end-October 2018, but only until (again I believe) end April 2018.
I'd call the tax office to find out why I hadn't received the forms, just for the records. I once had a neighbours tax forms delivered to my address. And another wealthy neighbours tax invoice also ended-up in my mailbox (would have been so tempting to open it, but resisted).

In Zurich they have huge backlog. For the first timers, they may not send form for 2-3 years and suddenly you may receive all of them together Better would be that you follow them proactively until they send you form. Keep in mind the 120k limit for people on tax at source. | Quote: | | | | | This has probably been answered multiple times, but I can't find anything...

You can always call them/email them and ask them to send you your tax number. Have your AHV number with you as they will probably ask for that (needs to be added in any tax filing)

Now the Tax office has to deal with all those people who did not declare earnings in other countries so it would explain the backlog

So no need to worry? I have been on B permit and taxed at source so far.

That is quick :-)
They just finalized 2018 for me. On average 2-3 years later seems to be normal

For me, it's the first time ever that Swiss tax office contacts me and send me declaration documents to fill, but not of this year's (2020), of 2018 and 2019 :-/

Finalised = final calculation and the information on how much you get back (or have to pay)

Now all come together!

Looks like they only realized now that you are over the 120k threshold.
If you live in the city of Zurich expect to pay extra. If you live in one of the low tax communes expect a refund.

Now all come together! | | | | | Don't worry, you paid taxes at the source. Just call the tax authorities directly if you want to better understand your current situation and why they only submitted all forms now.
And yes .... they have a huge backlog and it takes some time to process the tax return.

I called the cantonal Steuramt and they didn't know (the letter is from Gemeinde). I will go to Gemeindeverwaltung first thing on Monday.

Depending on your actual deductions and the tax rate of you either get reimbursed or have to pay the difference.
The city of Zurich has a rather high tax rate and people living in the city often also work there which means there travel deductions are lower than tax at source assumes. Hence a considerable higher tax bill.
Some rural communes like Maschwanden, Wila, or Bachs have a higher tax raten than the city. Some others such as Rüschlikon, Küssnacht, or Winkel have a considerable lower tax rate. https://www.zh.ch/de/steuern-finanze...uerfuesse.html
