Formula to calculate life expenses (Mittelverwendung)?

Greetings to All.

Does anyone know how life expenses (Mittelverwendung) are calculated by the Gemeinde to check plausibility of your income? Is it taken as a % of your income, eg., cost of insurances / food expenses / accommodation / etc. is XX% of your salary after social and pension fund deduction? Or are there recommended guidelines, eg., for a single person of age YY the cost of insurance is expected to be 2000 CHF per annum?

Is this calculation canton & Gemeinde specific?

Many thanks in advance and have a great day.

What exactly do you need this for? To determine whether you are allowed family reunification?

If it is this and you are on a tight budget, see if you earn above above the SKOS guidelines https://skos.ch/skos-richtlinien/ric...-konsultieren/ or the examples given here http://www.budgetberatung.ch/Budgetbeispiele.19.0.html

You may show and proof that you have more disposable income in case you live in an apartment with a very low rent.

No, no family reunification. I got a letter from my Gemeinde tax people who complained that according to their calculations, I have too many savings disproportional to my income and expected life expenses. They have requested for an explanation. I have been in the saving mode recently and reorganized my spend and lifestyle. Therefore the question, how do they come to the life expenses numbers? As some of them are far from real life.

Maybe they suspect you havenīt declared your wealth in full? No idea why spending less and saving more would be an issue otherwise

Thank you. No tight budget. No family reunification as explained above. Just trying to understand how they come to certain numbers.

Happened to a Swiss friend of mine as well. In his case it was even a family. And I am actually surprised it has not happend to me so far.

Simply use your actual numbers and show them how it is possible. As you see from the budget examples it is assumed that one who earns more also spends more. But that has not to be the case. There is no obligation to spend the money instead of saving it.

You may also dump your bank account statements of the last year and hand those in as well.

Re: Formula to calculate life expenses (Mittelverwendung)?

The tax authorities use the development of declared assets from year to year as a check to determine whether income has been properly declared (or that some assets have suddenly gone missing).

Although this may vary from place to place and according to an individual's circumstances, the tax authorities may include these expenses in their calculation:

Paid taxes, cantonal and federal
Housing rental costs *
Costs for food, clothing, cosmetics, entertainment, etc. *
Private insurance costs *

* - these are estimated costs as determined by the tax authorities. They can be challenged with more exact figures from the taxpayer.

Sometimes these inquiries border on being silly as the tax authorities already have the information at hand to answer their own question.

It looks like that you have now so much more money/wealth compared to last year. You might have sources which you have not yet communicated to tax authorities. Sources like donations, presents, heritage or other income they would like to know where the money is coming from.

Alternately, you may no longer have expenses that you had last year. If you can demonstrate, for example, that you went on a huge world cruise last year, and ran a fancy car, or had a lot of extra medical expenses that were not insured, but this tax year you're healthy, using public transport and staying at home growing your own vegetables, you might be able to explain the difference.

Living in a shared room, eating baked beans, rice etc will give change from 10,000 chf a year, no need to spend 8k a month.
