Working in VD / Vaud, moving to neighboring France

Hi all,

Has anyone had the experience of working and living in Vaud / VD, then moving to France (work still in VD), with kids?

Is it worth it, purely from a financial perspective (tax, cost of living, misc, etc.)?

The main driver would be the acquisition of a property, i.e. we can afford to buy a decent property in France, while we would probably still be renting for years in CH. Overall, do you know whether the legislation around home ownership is better in France vs CH? (no valeur locative, but what about inheritance, etc.)

Thanks for advising.

Nick

Re: Working in VD / Vaud, moving to neighboring France

I know two couples (one Swiss, one ex-Pat) that moved to Divonne. They both were back in Vaud within a few years.

I don't have their specific reasons but it is good that you are posting your question first. Health insurance was mentioned often as was 'everything just doesn't work'.

I'll try and get more detail.

All depends what value you put on your time.

Living in GVA will be meore expensive, sure, but you'll spend more time with your family and kids

Living in France you spend far less time with your family and kids.

Hint : Kids grow up quickly, don't blink or you'll miss it totaly

Thanks for your quick response. Bowlie, it would be great to hear some more detailed feedback from your friends who moved back from Divonne.

Today_only, while this may be true for Geneva commuters, for Vaud commuters from places like Divonne/Pays de Gex, commuting times are not not an issue, really. Manageable traffic and distances.

Re: Working in VD / Vaud, moving to neighboring France

More specific questions:

- Assuming you make around 200KCHF incl. bonus etc., how much remains after all deductions, taxes, health insurance, etc.

- How to deal with health insurance? Do you pay for both the French and Swiss social security, mutuelle, LAMAL, etc.? What's best to do?

- What's the issue around inheritance tax? Are there other such factors to take into account?

Thanks guys.

Nick
