Cumulus (Cembra Money Bank) - extra fees

I just bought Easyjet tickets for GVA - LIS and was slapped with a 1.5% foreign exchange fee by Cembra. These were flights paid for in CHF, on easyjet switzerland. I have never had a problem before with booking Easyjet flights with this credit card, so seems like this is new. Is this legal? Anyone else had this problem? Wondering how to fight this - I use Easyjet a lot and racking up 20 CHF+ per flight is not going to be cost-effective.

Yep, happens as Easyjet HQ is not based in Switzerland and they collect the funds.

There was a thread on this a while ago, explaining why

Re: Cumulus (Cembra Money Bank) - extra fees

Thanks! I booked easyjet flights last year and no such issues. I did a search with easyjet and cumulus and couldn't find the thread - do you mind linking it by any chance? I'd love to understand this. Thank you so much!

How about reading the terms and conditions, fee structures of your card?

Re: Cumulus (Cembra Money Bank) - extra fees

Thanks. These have not changed since I entered into a contract with them. But their system of chargebacks clearly has. Aldi's topco is German, but I don't get a foreign fee charge for groceries. So either this is only for online transactions, or only for certain retailers. Would welcome anyone else's experiences here.

From the FAQ:
Quote:

Even if the payment provider is aboard the point of sale is still in Switzerland and no fee applies. Does it make sense? No. Is it a form to get revenue from an otherwise free card? Sure it is.

Thanks aswissintheUS! I didn't get charged for Agoda bookings this month (point of sale: online), Amazon (point of salenline) and Easyjet (up till at least Dec 2017), which makes this really weird and non-comprehensible...

Change the currency to £, then pat the 1.75% it will be a better deal or pay with a UK or currency fair card.

Re: Cumulus (Cembra Money Bank) - extra fees

Sorry to hijack the thread, but - how satisfied are you with your Cumulus MasterCard?

I'm thinking about switching from UBS.

I do grocery shopping at Migros anyway, and I could earn points to pay there. Also according to their documentation you can withdraw cash at checkout with your Credit Card (for 0.- fees), have you ever tried that? That would be super convenient for me personally. Apparently not all Migros markets participate but I don't know if 10% participate or 99%. I would be interested to hear some insights on the matter.

Also the fees for foreign exchange and foreign shopping are 1.5% instead of 1.75%.

Re: Cumulus (Cembra Money Bank) - extra fees

Happened to me this month, for the first time.

One purchase from flix bus came with the 1.5% added on a separate line. This was usually added in the same line.

Two flights from TAP were charged the 1.5% fee, although originating from ZRH and paid for in CHF. This is new. We used TAP several times in the past years and never had it charged as additional. I intend to call them (Cembra) about it.

Screw CEMBRA. REVOLUT is the answer to all these ridiculous bank fees. Haven't looked back and recently even had a bizarre letter from my bank "...we noticed you are not using our credit card abroad...did you know we have reduced our fees to..." Had a laugh

Re: Cumulus (Cembra Money Bank) - extra fees

Hi,

I would suggest Transferwise especially as they use a Deutsche Bank account in Zurich when you make transfers which means they are very fast and no additional fees.

Have fun
Martin

It's a debit one. Download the app, register, get an IBAN. Transfer some amount to that IBAN and in a few days they ship the card to you. It sounds fishy. It isn't.

In general it is good. No annual fee, free supplementary card.

So is it a solution, in general, to pay in foreign currency?

No, then they will both rip you off on currency exchange rate AND charge 1.75% foreign fee on top.

Get Revolut.
