Update on move to Bern from the UK and UK Bank Account for Swiss Salary?

Hallo

So if any of you guys have looked at my previous threads, they about moving to Bern for work.

Well now I'm here, second week, I have a permit and apartment after hopping from one hotel to the other.

The HR person is expecting to see me, and they said having a UK bank account might be expensive for me.

I would like some advice on this issue (doing a search throwed up to many posts when using the OR separator)

So is it just stupid for me to ask for it to go to my UK bank account, its only because I have it already and I don't want to complicate any thing by having multiple accounts etc

Ask your bank to set up a swiss franc account, give the IBAN to your employer and that should be that. You'll have to pay the banks handling fee as i doubt your employer will pay that (they might) but that should be about 10 max.

Otherwise set up a swiss account with a standing order so as soon as your salary hits it will be transferred.

However, you may want to keep some money in switzerland to pay rent, shopping, petrol etc. You can use your UK debit card but they typically add 3% plus a turn on the exchange so it could be quite expensive.

why wouldn't you get a local bank? takes 10 minutes at post finance. its crazy to use a UK based CHF account. you'll pay horrible fees and won't have the flexibility of real swiss account. you won't be able to pay bills without physically going to the post office. just makes no sense.

Re: Update on move to Bern from the UK and UK Bank Account for Swiss Salary?

How do you expect to pay bills, etc, here without a Swiss bank account? Invoices are paid by payment slips attached to the invoices which you need to either pay with cash at a post office, via a paying-in machine at a Swiss bank, by sending the slips to your Swiss bank for payment or online with your Swiss bank. A UK bank simply will not be able to deal with these. And what about cash, you'll need that on a day to day basis or a Swiss debit card. Your UK debit card probably won't work here and would clock up exchange rate fees if it did work.

Just open a Swiss account. Doing anything else only make your life more complicated.

Let me give you the benefit of 25+ years living in Switzerland - things work out best for you when you go with the flow. In Switzerland you have a salary account, that it where your salary gets paid into and from where you pay your bills. Everyone knows how it works, it works very well for millions of people....

It is very easy to open an account as you are resident here and have are employed here. An it will be a lot less complicate than having to try and explain your unique situation any time you encounter a problem.

Re: Update on move to Bern from the UK and UK Bank Account for Swiss Salary?

Thanks guys

Some responses in relation to what has been said....

Yes I do have an IBAN from my UK account

I can take money out but yes there is a charge levied on my account each time I take money out from a cash machine

In terms of bills, I decided to use my UK telephone network for phoning and WIFI, and for my apartment bills are inclusive

Guess I will have to book a day off and go to a bank in town

Check whether you can do it online or not. UBS has an option to open accounts online.

Postfinance offer a new service where you can open an account on your smartphone and they use a videocall service to verify you.

It's also free to have the account as long as you hold >7500 CHF

Re: Update on move to Bern from the UK and UK Bank Account for Swiss Salary?

How long are you planning on being here?

If its 3 months then ok. It may be still beneficial to open a local account but also wont make a big impact if you use a UK account.

If you have an open contract, cut the ties. Be brave! I dont see why having multiple accounts is a hassle? I would guess most of us on here have a domestic account with our native country and a local Swiss account.

You can move money regularly back to blighty from your Swiss account if you have bills that need covering. Use currency fair or transfer wise and the cost is peanuts. Also worth checking out these borderless accounts with transferwise which are very good.

And the UK phone, well that may seem a great deal to you. But others will be contacting you and at some point I assume you will have local friends that wont be chuffed with texting or calling an overseas number
