Migros Cumulus Mastercard denied - US citizen/Swiss resident

Hey all - I am a US citizen recently relocated to Switzerland, living and working in Kanton AG since this May. I just got denied for the Migros Cumulus-Mastercard with this wonderfully opaque explanation:
"Aufgrund gesetzlicher Bestimmungen und interner Richtlinien sind wir leider gezwungen, Ihren Cumulus-Mastercard Antrag abzulehnen."

So if I understand, basically, "Sorry, nope!"

I have a decent job, but I'm wondering if it has to do with my permit status - even though my 'Arbeitsvertrag' lasts 3 years they gave me an L permit for some reason. Probably my citizenship doesn't help either (story about getting a bank account another day) - my credit in the US is spotless, though I am aware it doesn't typically count here.

Any thoughts? I'm thinking of just applying again next year assuming I get a B permit on renewal. Probably will also try with Coop.

Re: Migros Cumulus Mastercard denied - US citizen/Swiss resident

Deepl.com gives this translation.

"Due to legal requirements and internal guidelines, we are forced to reject your Cumulus Mastercard application."

Don't know for sure, but I suspect your US "taint" is more likely the problem. Not sure if Migros bank still accepts US clients or not. If you don't know what the taint is then google FATCA. Most banks here won't accept American clients for bank accounts due to it.

I'd try either UBS or Credit Suisse for a credit card.

My colleague who is also new in Switzerland was recently rejected by Cumulus (it's Cembra bank at the end) too. Even with B permit and non US citizenship.
He tried Coop and this worked for him.
Good luck.

Re: Migros Cumulus Mastercard denied - US citizen/Swiss resident

IIRC there was a thread on here recently about the same subject (without the US connection)...conclusion on that was that Cembra won't offer cards to anyone that's been here less than one year.

Edit - found it. Yes, no cards for less than 1 year residence

I have asked Cumulus when I was rejected in my first year in Switzerland. They told me then that in the first year, they can't approve the card.
after one year, they sent me alone papers for the card with additional points on the card.

Re: Migros Cumulus Mastercard denied - US citizen/Swiss resident

Thanks all. Quite helpful replies.

Yes I am acutely aware of FATCA - I was flatly rejected by the local Raiffeisen branch, and when Postfinance took me (after phoning HQ, they clearly were at a loss) I had to sign a stack of papers from Bern with a lawsuit's worth of German legalese - basically giving up my rights to privacy, etc.

Will see what happens with Coop. I probably could just get a Post credit card (https://www.postfinance.ch/en/privat...cts/cards.html) but I don't think I would use it enough for the rebate to make up for the annual fee.
