Each canton has its own rules on this, so the advice given here may or may not apply.
In Vaud where I live, there's a fixed amount deducted for the health insurance premiums, which has nothing to do with reality.
For cantonal tax, you have to have massive costs to be able to deduct anything, but I do get reductions for federal tax (IFD). It's a pain as you have to enter each item individually and obviously only costs you've paid yourself, after deduction of anything your health insurance has reimbursed.

Really? I just listed everything, including what was already reimbursed by the health insurance! I thought it was up to the tax people to check what was then acceptable and what wasn't!
