"Quellensteuerabzug" doubled!

Hi All

Hidden somewhere in this forum, there is perhaps an answer to my upcoming question, but all seemed very confusing to me, sorry in advance.

I am a PhD student in the university of Bern: last month, I got a 7.8% increase in my gross salary since I started my second year.

However, the "Quellensteuerabzug", whose ratio to the gross salary is not indicated in the "Gehaltsabrechnung", increased almost by 100% !!! All other deduction rates stayed the same.

At the end, while I was expecting a modest increase in my very modest salary, my netto decreased!

Is this normal, or should I investigate it further?

Thanks for any advice.

I don't know the answer as well.

When I got my salary increased twice - around 5-8%, however my netto even got almost the same amount of increase at the same time......

Are you married and did your spouse start working perhaps? Or is it the month of June you are talking about, in which case Bern pays you half of the 13th month (if you get any) in that month, and the quellensteuer for that month is much higher than normal. It will revert back in July...

You have given us other percentages, why not the deduction percentage? (Easy enough to work out if not provided) This would be most helpful.

For example if 33% was previously deducted and it's now 66% something is clearly wrong, but if it were 8% to 16% this would seem to indicate your income crossed a tax-level threshold. Anyway, your employer will know the answer...

Re: "Quellensteuerabzug" doubled!

Thanks a lot for the replies. First of all, I am single.

Yes, I got my 13.month half salary in June, so maybe the tax will decrease in July again (hopefully). I did not know this. On the other hand, the "Quellensteuerabzug" calculation seems to be done independent from the 13.month salary, there is a seperate "Quellensteuerabzug" value in the 13.month salary part. But I don't know, as I said.

Percentage: the "Quellensteuerabzug" seems to have increased from around 5% of the gross salary to 10%. So, maybe now I am in another taxing level, as one of you said.

Anyway, I will get the July's salary tomorrow, let's see.

Thanks once again to everyone who replied.

Re: "Quellensteuerabzug" doubled!

OK, I've received today my new "Gehaltsabrechnung". Here are my conclusions:

1) Yes, Quellensteuerabzug jumps when one gets half of the 13th month's salary. It is not that high now.

2) But again, it is high. It increased from around 5% of the gross salary to 7%.

3) All other deduction rates are the same.

4) At the end, my netto increased by only 2.7%, despite the 7.8% rise in gross salary.

Do you think is it worth to ask "why" for this?

Thanks in advance.

Re: "Quellensteuerabzug" doubled!

Go to the local tax office for where you live and ask for a quellensteuer book and look it up....

quellensteuer goes on what you earn and if you pay church tax or not....would be the easiest way to find out...

i don't have mine no more or i could have told you....sorry

Seems OK. On another EF thread, there is a link to an online calculator for tax deducted at source. That might answer your question.

Re: "Quellensteuerabzug" doubled!

Today I received an e-mail from the secretary of our institute:

Dear non-Swiss members of our Institute who have to pay "Quellensteuer" ("source tax"):
You probably all noticed that quite a lot of tax was deducted in June due to one half of the 13th salary being paid out in that month. This was hard, but the calculations were correct.

However, the same happened again in July, but this time it was a mistake, as you only received the "normal" salary.

Personnel informed us that this will now be amended in August. Please check your August salary slip carefully and report to your secretary if you think something is not right yet.

Best regards
