Japanese stocks and WHT

Does anyone hold directly Japanese stocks e.g. via IB. If so, how did you handle the withholding tax on dividends? I remember filling out a form to get reduced WHT on US stocks.

I was wondering whether the treaty rate is applied automatically for Japanese stocks or whether there is also an administrative procedure to go through?
