Interactive Brokers - Trading options

Hi all,

Has anybody traded call/puts on US stocks on IB?

I wonder what kind of option markets they offer (which exchange) if the prices posted are reliable and good and what is the cost and minimum size to enter a trade?

Is it a liquid market? Volumes? Any experiences?

Many thanks!!

Re: Interactive Brokers - Trading options

Yes, IB is one of the biggest brokers for US options trading! I use it and have done for some time.

"Is it a liquid market? Volumes?" That depends on the stock or ETF, but options on US large caps and ETFs like SPY are the most liquid in the world........

You can trade with a minimum of 1 contract........cost is about $1/contract. Of course the prices are reliable, they are not some special prices for IB, it's the market prices.

It sounds like you don't know much about option trading, so be careful, and feel free to ask some more questions......

Re: Interactive Brokers - Trading options

Hi everyone, need some help with a trade:
I'm trying to buy some call options on Sep 2020 Eurodollar futures.
Interactive Brokers is asking me for a "maintenance margin".

I'm not selling a call or selling a put, but buying a call.

Does anyone have a clue as to why IB could be asking for a margin?

Thanks!

I suggest calling their customer service, they have been very good at answering my questions so far.

Do they do take-away?

If so then I’d go very bullish on wonton, vegetarian spring-roll, fried rice and Singapore noodles. Caps on the price, OK with the tactical to a certain extent (but don’t really enjoy octopus). Preference - a nice, passive scampi. At best raised within ethical funds of course.

Gotta go for a mutual, so better double that.

Oh, and the appreciation shouldn’t stink the bedroom out (windows closed in winter).

So when will my order arrive?

PS. You’d be pretty stupid to buy a call? Especially if you need to look for the advice on EF.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Totally uncalled for.

Rest of your rant could pass-off as a bad joke on a slow news day, but calling someone stupid for asking a question... well that just makes Zurich roll.

What next, calling people stupid who moved to CH, because they ask for advice on EF all the time?

Sorry, could not resist.

So you know about buying calls?

Then you would know that the OPs original question, especially as it was to EF, was pretty damned stupid.
And that his only answer was simply taking them for a ride.

OP Flávio - be careful - if you don’t know what margin /maintenance is, then please don’t invest!

Thanks for the unsolicited advice. Welcomed though. I always appreciate feedback from more knowledgeable people.
As such a more
-knowledgeable-person that you are, you may have come across the information I am looking for.
My original question:
Do you know why IB requires margins to buy (not sell) call options?
Thank you!
Flavio

Start a chat with customer service. They will answer your question.

I google it for you though and it seems IB has started asking for this margin to protect themselves from an adverse market move that may affect their bottom line. Don't forget that they root their orders via hedge funds like Citadel etc.
