Studying in the US Tax status?
Dear all,
Was hoping some knowledgeable expats with experience of such a scenario may be able to help?
Iíve been working in CH for the past few years and accumulated pensions here. Iím a British National.
Iím now going to the US to study for a year and will therefore be unemployed for the entire duration.

If I take my Swiss pension out in cash and deposit it somewhere - am I tax liable in the US (obvs would have had filed my tax returns here for the year)?

I read some funny things like even students on an F1 need to file some manner of return (which makes no sense to me).

Any advice on this would be great! Thank you!!

Re: Studying in the US Tax status?
You will have to file IRS Form 8843 https://www.irs.gov/individuals/inte...reign-students and Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1040-nr-ez.
The first one is to claim non-resident alien status, the later is a simple tax declaration form for non-resident aliens where only income of US source will be taxed.

The International Student Office of your institution should have additional information and can help you with filling those forms.

Re: Studying in the US Tax status?
Thank you!!!
So sounds like it will have nothing to do with my Swiss income/assets, only the US one of which there shouldnít be any as I will be a poor student.

Many thanks! 👍😊
