UK pension and UK taxes

Need some help. I am a Swiss national who worked 5 years in the UK during my working years. I returned to Switzerland years ago and am now retired. The UK pension I get is paid into my bank account here in Switzerland. I am taxed here in Switzerland for my Swiss & UK pension. Today I received a letter from the UK tax office saying I have to pay taxes to the UK on my UK pension. Please can someone advise me if this is correct that I have to pay taxes in Switzerland and the UK as I am Swiss and live in Switzerland. Many thanks for the help.

Normally it would be taxable in the UK along with a £12000 tax free allowance so it's often beneficial. If you fill in a double taxation form which the Swiss will need to sign you can elect for some or all tp be taxable in CH

Then it would make sense for it to be taxable in the UK as zero tax is payable. That would be the default position.

I would also recommend UK pensions advice, it shouldn't be that expensive, maybe 200-400 quid.

It's a tax issue, not a pensions issue.

This is HMRC page with download to DT1 if someone wishes to elect the pension to the taxed elsewhere.

Re: UK pension and UK taxes

The UK are not allowed to tax UK pensions of Swiss residents. Read the Swiss/UK Double taxation agreement where this is clearly stated.

Re: UK pension and UK taxes

Thank you all for the replies. I will write to the UK tax office they probably made a mistake asking for over £700 tax amount. This is the first time they are asking for me to pay tax and I do not even have a tax number. Have a great day 😎
