Make Donations to British charities tax deductable in CH?

Hey guys,

I support a charity in the UK and would like to continue doing so. It is relatively small and they are not on Kanton/Stadt Zurich's list of approved charities (to which donations are tax deductable) and have no representation in CH.

I've searched the web and the forum for information if there is a way to do this but it seems inconclusive. Is there maybe a company/service that does this for a minimal charge and then transfers the donation to the UK? Or has anyone found another way to make this type of donation CH tax deductable?

Many thanks,

Viridian

If it is so important to you then continue to do so, it is not as if the tax deduction is that big in any case.

There is no reason why we should give tax benefits to foreign charities, the idea is to encourage donations to our charities.

Re: Make Donations to British charities tax deductable in CH?

Yes of course I can continue to just donate, I had also worked that out I am more asking if anyone has found a solution in principle.

The Kanton ZH acceptable charity list includes many charities where the donations do not go to CH, like Nepal children's help etc, so the argument that it's local and Swiss doesn't really count. The cahrity I have in mind is too small to get set up in CH.

If anyone has a constructive idea, I'd very much welcome the input. Many thanks!

The charity foundation has to be registered in Switzerland. This is confirmed with my accountant.

Thanks Elo3, that was also my understanding. I was wondering if there is maybe a Swiss agency that bundles payments and acts as an agent for foreign charities or something along those lines. Might not be possible form a legal point of view then...

It's great you support small charities, as they do more with your donation than the bigger ones who have very large overheads. I no longer support Swiss charities as local ones do not really need it as they get so much support from the state, and those in Switzerland that support overseas aid also have high overheads and work with NGO's that do little to actually solve the problem. In fact it's not in their interest to do so, as if they did they would soon be out of work themselves. Read "Dead Aid", it's quite an eye opener.

If you have any UK income, such as dividends, rent, bank interest then they can claim the tax back in the UK. Otherwise I'm afraid it's not deductible.
