Finally got my tax declaration back, help me decipher please?

Hi,

I finally got a letter from the (Zurich) tax office regarding my tax declarations in 2016 and 2017 (I still had quellensteuer then). They come as a "Einschätzungsentscheid" and a "Veranlagungsverfugung". They show similar calculations and a couple of very small corrections they applied to my tax declarations. The Veranlagungsverfugung comes with a page (Steuerberechnung) showing a number, computed applying a specific tax rate to my Steuerbares Einkommen. This page refers only to then Direct Bundessteuer the tax rate is rather small.

Questions:

- how do I use this number(s) to guess the bill that they will send me in a month? I am pretty sure I owe them money, but how much? When I compare the total I paid in quellensteuer and what the Private Tax software gave me for all 3 taxes together, I should owe them a few thousands CHF, can I (still) rely on that estimate?

- given that this papers only mentions the federal tax, do I need to expect one more bill for cantonal/city tax?

Thanks for any hints!

G

You normally get 1 page with Bundessteuer and one with Cantonal/City. They may or not come together.

You can use the online calculator to enter the taxable amount, see what you owe and deduct what you paid to get the final bill.

Final bill usually due within 30 days but in Zurich for example, they are amenable to grant extensions as long as you respond and tell them your plan.

The first time I got my tax bill, it was for around 3k. I phoned them up because they had not deducted my quellensteuer. Turns out the reason they had not was because it was federal tax, oh, and by the way, something is wrong..... lots of typing and Swiss German later, turns out it was 160 chf.
Some typo!

But yes, you will get a separate bill with canton/geminder together. If the changes they made are minor, then it should still be in line with the estimate.

I'd say yes, the estimate with private teax should be pretty accurate. Else, your Kanton probably offers a tax calculator which would be a safe bet
