Monthly Payments of Provisional Kantonal Tax Bill

Hi All,

Aargau sent me a provisional tax bill for 2020 (Provisorische Steuerrechnung) which isn't due until the end of October. I was wondering if it was possible/acceptable/common for me to make monthly payments starting now so that it's fully paid off by the due date?

Thanks in Advance!

Yes, you can pay in advance. Some few Kantons give you a small interest on that amount. No idea if Aargau does that.

Ask your Steueramt for an "Einzahlungsschein", if that is not attached. That will give you a specific number so they can allocate the payments to you.

Re: Monthly Payments of Provisional Kantonal Tax Bill

Advance payments of tax bills can be made and are apparently still done by many taxpayers. Ct. Aargau encourages advance payments by granting a (minor) discount of 0.10% up until 31.10.2020.

Although it is unlikely that Ct. Aargau would object to receiving monthly payments, it is likely more common for taxpayers to make two or three payments before the deadline.

Hope that helps.

Fantastic, thank you!

There is an Empfangsschein with a reference number, which I presume is similar to the Einzahlungsschein you mention.

Maybe monthly payments is an American thing. ;-)

Thank you for the information, will go ahead and set it up. And 0.10% is not a lot, but something...

We prepay our taxes before 31 December. It reduces our fortune we have to pay taxes on.

Me too. Been doing it ever since we got our C permits back in 2003.

You should also be able to pay your gemeinde and Federal tax bills the same way; I do.

Re: Monthly Payments of Provisional Kantonal Tax Bill

Absolutely you can. Doesn't really matter what or when so long as it's all paid by the due date.

If you already have a tax bill to pay, you can also ask to pay installments. This should be done before the due date. The maximum they usually give is 6 equal payments and then a month or two after the last payment they will send you a bill for the interest with 30 days to pay!
