Work in Basel 8 days a month and the rest in UK?

Hi All,

My first ever post so any help appreciated.

I recently started a contract role in Basel where I'll be working one week Mon -Thurs on site (Friday remote from the UK) and the next week fully remote on a alternating basis for 12 months.

I'll be employed by the recruiter's Swiss umbrella company and paid in CHF. The recruiters have said because I'll be taxed at source in Switzerland so I don't have to worry about UK tax. This sounds too good to be true, anyone able to offer any advice or insight?

Thanks

It is indeed too good to be true.
You are liable, as a UK resident, for tax on your earnings.

Search on this forum, or just go to HMRC website and look up the DTA with Switzerland. Usually they will give worked examples.

Also, if you work more than 25% in the UK, all national insurance is due in the UK, not Switzerland. So all social taxes!! You will also need an A1 certificate. If you search on A1 and EU / EEA and 'substantial work'for multistate workers, you will find eu documents that explain this.

But if you are lost I can dig mine out.

Search for Practical-guide-posting-workers_EN

On tax, you can claim credit on the UK self assessment form for tax paid in CH, under tax relief. Not easy to fill out!

That's 60% working in the UK. Noriwant will be tax resident in both countries. he/she will need to fill in a tax return in both countries. Since she/he's on PAYE in CH, any tax Noriwants pays in CH will be offset against Noriwants's tax burden in the UK.

Do you have a link for that? I've gone into this several times over the years, and don't recall a 25% rule. This is something that needs to be carefully checked as usually the employer is responsible for deducting eeNIC and paying erNIC. However, I do recall that HMRC want their NICs at some point.

@Noriwants - I suggest you ask your question on forums.contractoruk.com. There are people there with detailed knowledge of how UK NIC works for contractors.

What kind of work permit do you have?
