Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

I got it in 2008 as I was still a US citizen at the time, but didn't want to cash the check due to the costs, so gave it to my daughter when she went for 6 months later that year, thus the money was spent in the US.

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

In case people didn't read the ACA link above, Americans living abroad might have a bit more trouble getting the payment if they don't have a US bank account.

Also looking at the link provided by robBob, if you're married filing separately you can't use the non-filers link to provide your info electronically. Nor can you use it if your gross income was more than $12,500, because of course in that case you should file.

Hey, so does anybody know the best course of action would be for Americans who have filed their taxes for 2018/2019 but don't have a bank account in America? I'm getting some mixed messages from this thread and from other sources of mine.

The easiest is to get a U.S. bank account, to be honest, or to have the funds sent to a relative or friend's account. Otherwise if you put your Swiss address on your return, I think they will mail you a check at some point, which you then can try to fight with a bank here to cash.

From Robbob's link above, you can open a credit union account via ACA
https://www.americansabroad.org/sdfcu-account/

Then you still have to communicate the routing and account info to the IRS. Not sure how that is done.

Ughh this is typical bureaucracy. I have spent some time on the IRS's website to figure out how I can contact them but have had no luck. My friend told me that he thought it would be a direct deposit based on the bank account you used to file your taxes. But who knows?

$1200 potentially depending on your income and if you file individually or a joint tax return

According to the Business Insider article linked below: "The IRS will mail the stimulus check if a person doesn't have direct deposit."

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

Apparently my check is being mailed to me.
I could not ever get the IRS website to work. I was entering my address on the irs site as I wrote it on my Tax form.
Swissstrasse 21. It kept telling me my information was wrong.
I tried all caps which worked for my brother but still no luck.
Finally I tried 21 Swissstrasse and it worked... but too late to input bank info...

will see how long it takes... mail from the US seems to be very slow lately. My parents sent me a card which in normal times takes a week and its been 3 weeks and still no sign of it...

Are Swiss banks accepting US checks? I've heard it can be very difficult to find a bank willing to do such a transaction.

If you filed 2018 and/or 2019 taxes and included your bank info on that, then you should receive a direct deposit. If the IRS doesn't have info for you, but you did file, then you'll receive a paper check. However it's not foolproof. My mom filed electronically both years and put in her banking info for her refund. The refunds came direct deposit. Yet she received a paper letter saying the paper stimulus check will be mailed this week.

If you have not filed, I doubt you will get anything.

My father (in the US) use to send my little boy checks for his birthday and Christmas. We finally took them to our bank here in Switzerland, and the bank teller looked at the check as though it was some bizarre alien object -- something she had never seen before. (Seriously). And she said there wasn't anything that she or the bank could do with them. My Swiss husband said that pretty much everything is done electronically here and people don't use checks. But what I can't understand about that is how do older people who don't have computers manage?

If you have an account in a Swiss Bank, they will probably process the check. But it will take 5 or 6 weeks.

I had a monthly retirement payment which wasnít big enough to deal with on a monthly basis, so I never claimed it. Suddenly, the company was offering a lump sum distribution, so I took that.

My bank is CS. They take the check, physically send it to the US bank and the US bank transfers the funds - took 5 weeks, exchange rate was lousy . Neither transferwise nor Revolut would take the check either and I have no US bank account. Still it was worth it as it was money Iíd not expected.

My Late FIL in another EU country managed via telephone and going to the bank till he got his computer. Here I think people go to the post office or maybe their own bank. Itís possible.

I have a similar situation-- I finally got the IRS.gov site to accept my information, and it now says a paper check was mailed on 01.May to what I suppose/hope is my Swiss address. Still no sign of it as of today... anyone receive theirs yet, or is it safe to assume it will be delayed over a month?

If you put your Swiss address on the info for the IRS, and not just a U.S. address, then in theory the check will come here. A month does seem long, though.
