Jaskah, just have a member of your family in the US cash it or deposit into any account they have in the US. We have not lived in the US for 12 years but, from time to time, this issue still comes up. We just use our daughter's account in Atlanta to deal with these issues. And then she direct deposits money into our account in France. Or, she just gives us cash the next time we go to visit her.

Unfortunately, I no longer have any family members in the U.S. who could help me out with this. I've been living in Europe 30 years now, 20 of those in Switzerland.
I'm hoping some friends back home can help me out.
I'll report back when I finally have a solution (i.e. can get the cash checked!).

But thanks for your reply.
Jason

I have cashed checks from the United States with Credit Suisse before. I do have a savings account with them though. It would takes weeks for them to credit the balance to my account. I haven’t went through the process of cashing a check with them for a long time. I opened a account from Alliant credit union in the US some years back and that is how I was able to cash my check. They allow mobile deposits so I just took a photo of the check and they did the rest. I still however have to request a international transfer whenever I can find the time. This week has been way to busy.
It takes 5-6 weeks. They send the physical check back to the issuer in the US, everyone verifies it and then finally the money is transferred. Plus it’s an awful exchange rate.

Re: cashing covid economic impact payment check

Just discovered that my bank in the US (TD Bank) allows remote check deposit through their ebanking app by making a photo of the check. Crazy new fangled tech. So if I don’t find another solution I’ll give that a try.

Also, if you use Paypal, this might be a solution for you https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mp...47113154613189

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

I got my check today as well. Now I have to figure out how in hell do I cash it.

So, the qualification is based on the Adjusted Gross Income which means that as long as you claimed Foreign Income Exclusion, you *probably* qualify unless your income is really high. If you claimed Foreign Tax Credit then you probably don't qualify.

Re: cashing covid economic impact payment check

hello again
so, a quick update. i'm applying for a savings account with the state department federal credit bureau (after becoming a member of american citizens abroad). sdfcd are asking for a TRANSLATED utility bill. has anyone here had to have something like this translated or would you know how i could go about having this done? i assume they're not just asking me to translate it myself.
thanks for any help.

Re: cashing covid economic impact payment check

This article "How Expats Can Cash Checks From the IRS While Abroad" suggests:

  • Deposit to a bank account if they accept US checks (easy!)
  • Paypal now offers to cash your US Stimulus Checks. With a Paypal account, you can easily link it and transfer money to your bank account in the country you live
  • Open a credit union account with, for example, the State Department Federal Credit Union (for which you can become eligible by joining American Citizens Abroad), or a bank such as USAA Savings Bank that accommodates US citizens abroad
  • Open a TransferWise Borderless account, which gives you a USA bank account number. Some people have had success with getting tax refunds in that account

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

If you have a bank in the US like any reasonable American you can certainly use the postal service to deliver your check.
Otherwise UBS will be happy to help you out for a small fee.

Yeah... it is getting harder and harder. I'll just endorse mine to someone in my family and send it back to the states.
Hi Jazh!

Can you please explain what you mean exacrtly by "endorse" to your family? I cannot cash my stimulus check at postfinance. My dad however still has a US bank account but they told him that they cannot cash it because it's a personal check on my name. Can this somehow be bypassed by "endorsing? PLEASE enlighten me! It's very frustrating at the moment. thank you!

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

Endorsing a check means signing the back of it, and in the cases proposed here, you would actually sign the check over to someone else before signing it, by writing “pay to the order of Xxxxx Xxxxx” on the back and then signing it below. It must be exactly in such an order:

Pay to the order of
Jane Doe
Signature

By doing this you’re signing the check over to a third party so they can cash or deposit it. Policies on accepting third party checks vary from bank to bank, so make sure it will be accepted before attempting this method. I think the issuing bank is required to cash third party checks in person, but that might be difficult with US Treasury checks.

Editorial: Really, any US federal government agency that handles cash should be required to cash US Treasury checks, I believe. But our government doesn’t really exist for us, does it. That much is clear. /editorial

If you have someone that will cash for you in the US, I recommend scanning both sides of the check and then endorsing it digitally. That way if their bank does not accept it as such, you can change it. Plus, most banks let you upload jpegs of checks, so you wouldn't have to physically mail it back to the states. Hope this helps!

I deposited mine digitally into my US account. I didn’t enquire about third party checks but I’d be really surprised if banks would accept them digitally/remotely.

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

Thank you for the explanation! I sure would have not known how to do that correctly.

Yes, I sign that, the US government sure seems more against us than for us often enough. I still almost can't believe that they actually sent us expats a stimulus check too. But that they actually sent a check and didn't simply deposit the money in my account shows how much they care. Not. My bank told me that checks aren't used here since at least 50 years!

When I first moved here 13 years ago, they would still cash them for a 20.- fee, and they said they stopped using checks ten years prior. I'm certain Switzerland used to take the lead in banking technology, especially when it helped streamline their system and increase revenue. Now that new tech is all about decentralizing, i.e. Apple Pay, banks here are slow to adopt.

As mentioned above, the U.S. government has no way to directly/electronically deposit money into your Swiss bank account, because the two countries use totally different systems. USA uses routing numbers and account numbers, whereas the Swiss use IBAN.

For those abroad that didn't have a U.S.-based account or didn't have time to input that info on the IRS website, the only way the Treasury Department could comply with the law was to mail you a paper check. How or if you cash the check is your problem, not the Treasury Department's.

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

No need to worry guys.
In one year they will issue you a new check.

As for SDFCU requesting a translated Util bill. That I cant remember ever doing for em.
But just scan the bill and paste it into DEEPL.com

By the way sent my check by snail mail (A Post in fact) 3 weeks ago and it just go deposited 2 days ago. Not so torturing.
