Just discovered that my bank in the US (TD Bank) allows remote check deposit through their ebanking app by making a photo of the check. Crazy new fangled tech. So if I donít find another solution Iíll give that a try.
That's what I did and 24hrs later money was in my checking account.

Where can you cash a US government check?

I have received a US government check and have been told by my financial institution that they can not cash it. Appears that checks are obsolete here, any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Re: Where can you cash a US government check?

Major banks will do it. UBS took care of it in 15 minutes for me. I think they're much more used to them now than they were a few years ago (definitely remember getting a strange look and being told "I don't know what this is").

Re: Where can you cash a US government check?

But only if you have an account with UBS. They refused to open an account for me 10 years ago because they would no longer do it for US Citizens. I inquired with a bank where my parents in the US have an account and they told me that they will not accept these specific checks if they are issued in someone else's name - I think that they will have difficulty clearing them with the IRS because of fraud. So, I guess opening an account with the State Department Federal Credit Union is the only way to do it, unless you already have a US bank account.

Still no stimulus payment?

Anyone else in CH still struggling to get their stimulus payment? Mine has been stuck on mailed May 1, 2020. I was asked in August to update my direct deposit information, which I did, but nothing has changed. Followed that up with a payment trace 12 weeks ago and today after a 30 minute wait and the most unfriendly (even by IRS standards) help on the phone was told "go to the website and trace it there."
Bit of a circle.
I havent received a clear answer, is there a way to claim this on my 2020 refund? Anyone else still stuck in stimulus purgatory?

Yes, there will be a form that asks how much money you received and you will be able to get an equivalent "tax refund" of the amount that you are eligible.

I have an account with a US bank as a non-citizen, never-resident. An American must be able to open one!

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

Has anyone gotten their second round stimulus check? I have a few local American friends who are still waiting. I wonder if they left expats out of this round (though if thatís the case we can still claim the tax refund).

I got the first one as a paper check, but not the second one. On the IRS website, it says the status is unavailable for me. Not sure if it will come or not.

I received my direct deposit already. It has turned out to be very handy that the IRS has been depositing refunds in the same account for decades.

A few friends that await paper checks said they were notified that the paper checks will be mailed by Jan. 29.

Keep checking the website though. I think it's quite common for folks abroad to get the "not available" for some time and then magically it's there.

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

My first stimulus check took about two months to reach here, but hopefully this one wonít take that long. The status on my second check says that it was supposed to be mailed January 6th. I havenít received it yet though but hopefully soon.

Another friend "checked" her status today and it said the same as yours - supposed to be mailed Jan. 6th - to a U.S. address. Certainly seems there's some sort of problem/glitch.

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

I think the post is slow right now. I just received a card mailed from North Carolina on the 29th of December last Wednesday. So stuff mailed the 6th could still be on the way.

Re: US Coronavirus Stimulus Checks [Cheques]

I too was told the check was was to be mailed on January 6th but still have not received anything. My mother also sent me a letter on Januray 16th and it still has not arrived here. It used to be a first class mail from the US would arrive within 4-5 business days.

Anyone else have non-government US mail delays??

I think there aren't enough flights running to move mail as quickly, either on that side of the pond or this side. My friend mailed a Christmas card on Dec 15 and we received it Monday. It was a standard card, proper size, addressed correctly, not too thick or heavy, etc.

As an example, pre-Covid there were four direct flights daily to European countries from Denver. All of those flights carried cargo as well as people. At present there are no direct flights.

Agreed in the observation of mail between the US/CH has been slower than normal. I think that 3Wishes makes some good points as to "why"
