Last date of Filing / Declaring Tax 2020 delayed due to COVID

The last date for filing of tax declaration for the year 2019 has been delayed to 30 jun 2020 due to Corona Virus.

Here is the link for canton FRIBOURG.

I presume all cantons are doing something similar.

PLEASE CHECK FOR YOUR OWN CANTON

You can also extend it to nov30 (at least in Winterthur) online.

- like you can very year, but you‘ll be charged interest if you don‘t pay till the final bill the following year.

Too late. Did my return on VSTax and because I didn't have a password and though Sion promised to ring me back on my Natel they never did -- I am on self-isolation in London and unlikely to get back home to Valais anytime soon -- I printed out and posted the declaration via Royal Mail Tracked (arrived in Sion today) and uploaded via Tell Tax VS over 100 pages of documents including my IRS Form 1040. Since most of my income is from US sources IRS will want to tax it first and if the famous US Tax Court case (easily found online) Tiller v. Commissioner ("never mind that the French say they get to tax your US income first, we say the opposite"), affirmed on appeal, is any guide this will have to go to Competent Authority for resolution since I am a dual national. Haven't ever used the VS Tax software before, 2019 is my first (part) year as a resident.

Re: Last date of Filing / Declaring Tax 2020 delayed due to COVID

This is the updated Zurich tax office communication (translated):

"Corona: Deadline for filing tax returns extended to 31 May 2020 and further measures (updated)

03 April 2020 - Communique

Tax relief measures were also taken as part of the Corona package of the Government Council. The deadline for filing the 2019 tax return was extended to 31 May 2020 for all natural persons. Taxpayers who are currently unable to pay their tax bills due to the consequences of the corona virus have the option of deferring payment or paying in instalments. The default interest rate has been reduced from 4.5% to 0.25%.

The following measures were taken due to the effects of the coronavirus:

Deadline for filing the 2019 tax return: The Finance Department has extended the ordinary deadline for filing the 2019 tax return for individuals until 31 May 2020. This takes into account the increased burden on many taxpayers due to the current situation.

Adjustment of the provisional invoices: Companies that expect to incur losses due to the effects of coronavirus or individuals who suffer a loss of income may request an adjustment of the provisional invoice for state and municipal taxes from the municipal tax office.

Deferral of tax invoices: Companies and individuals who are currently unable to pay definitive tax invoices due to the effects of coronavirus may obtain an extension of the payment period or payment by instalments. The municipal tax office is responsible for state and municipal taxes, and the cantonal tax office is responsible for direct federal taxes. In the case of direct federal tax, provisional tax bills can also be deferred. Municipal tax offices and cantonal tax offices are instructed to handle deferral and instalment payment requests generously and quickly.

Interest on arrears: With a decision of 1 April 2020, the Federal Council reduced the interest on arrears for state and communal taxes from 4.5% to 0.25% from 1 May to 31 December 2020. The interest rate on arrears is thus now the same as the unchanged compensatory and remuneration interest. In the case of direct federal tax, the default interest rate is 0% from 1 March to 31 December 2020.

Restoration of the deadline / raising of objections: Statutory deadlines, in particular the thirty-day deadline for raising objections, cannot be extended by the tax authorities. However, the exceptional situation due to the coronavirus is considered a reason for an extension of the time limit. At the end of the extraordinary situation, the period for objection therefore begins to run anew. The objection must be made in writing (on paper) in accordance with the legal requirements; submission of the objection by e-mail is not valid."

Re: Last date of Filing / Declaring Tax 2020 delayed due to COVID

Hi all,

In canton ZH, is it correct that this deadline extension applies to tax filing, but NOT to the deadline for the 3rd Pillar tax refund when taxed at source (Quellensteuer)?

I don't see this situation discussed in the Steueramt's update page, and the form itself does still have a March 31st deadline. So that might be my answer. But I wanted to double check with the forum, as my German isn't faultless and my knowledge of canton ZH's tax website isn't either.

I may have messed this up... I had heard about the deadline extension and assumed it applied generally.

Answer for canton Zurich. How you do it should not change the result.
But if you do it online I recommend to use the full version and not the simplified one. If you do it on paper use Private Tax and print everything out.

The software knows the deductible limits.

3) What are the consequences if I made a mistake/-s and how Authorities will behave in this case? like fine or they will just correct it and that's all?

4) for eg. I provide lunch expenses 6000CHF, but according to some regulations -> I can tax only 3000CHF. Will I be notified about this? or they will correct it without notification
5) in case of extra docs or proofs -> I'll be not able to provide it or they will not accept them-> cancelation of that reduction or some fines or smth else?

Depends on the mistake and the reason you made the mistake. But simple mistake or wrong deductions are just corrected w/o further consequences. They might even correct in your favor. But do not count on it and do it right.

If extra evidence or documents are need they will contact you. You anyway have only to submit a reduced set of accompanying documents. Read the instructions carefully what has to be submit with the tax declaration and what has to be provided on request only.

At the end there will be an official Veranlagung/Einschätzung (assessment) You will be notified if the official calculation is different from your tax declaration or if numbers have been corrected. This will be sent by post and you will have 30 days to object against this decision.
