Paying UK Taxes while living in Switzerland?

Hello,

I'm grateful if anyone can help with the following, pointing to an existing thread or commenting on the below.

I'm a Swiss resident (EU national) living in Switzerland with my partner (employed in Switzerland) and our two kids. I've been offered a job in the UK, which I can do remotely from Switzerland. My future employer will deduct income tax and national insurance from my salary automatically. Since I'm already paying taxes and insurance in Switzerland, anybody knows if and how I can reclaim the amount deducted from my salary?

Many thanks,

Daphne

You can't reclaim but you can use it as a credit against your Swiss liability.

Thanks! What does that mean practically? Less Swiss taxes?

Depending on Salary you probably pay no Swiss tax as Uk tax is probably more than the Swiss liability

I expect it is not that straightforward....

Depending on the OPs resident status and whether the OP performs any UK duties, there may be no PAYE obligations in which case it maybe possible to pay the salary gross.

@OP your employer needs to seek guidance on this.

Search this forum for ANOBAG.

Apparently, the UK have a similar system for people who live there, working for a foreign employer.

I would say it's likely he'd pay Swiss taxes as they'd have first dibs and he'd have to claim any UK tax back from the UK. It could leave him in a messy double taxation situation.

Re: Paying UK Taxes while living in Switzerland?

We have a similar situation - one of incomes from UK, we have to pay the UK tax. For most of people UK tax would be higher but in our case Swiss tax is higher so we still have to pay the difference of Swiss tax on top.

If you are residing in Switzerland this is the scenario. It changes if you are also tax resident in the UK, then after a while your WW income becomes UK taxable (but from what you said I understand that this is not the case). Generally my experience with the tax office in Switzerland has been positive in the sense that they'll answer your questions if you give them a call.

Also, not sure about you but in our case UK tax is automatically deducted anyways. You can opt to get out of the UK pension system and payments though.

Re: Paying UK Taxes while living in Switzerland?

it will also depend if your "partner" is your "husband" as another complicating factor is in the UK you file individually, and in Switzerland if you are married they assess your combined income.

...and to further complicate things of course the tax year dates are different
