Can I buy 3rd pillar for my unemployed wife?

My wife has never worked. Can I buy 3rd pillar life insurance for her? Many thanks.

Life insurance 3a is almost always a bad idea. Have you thought about equities?

Re: Can I buy 3rd pillar for my unemployed wife?

Probably not. I think she would have to have some kind of taxable income to be able to have a 3a.

I dont know your situation and you should investigate further if its the best option, possibly not. But there is a 3b life insurance you could get for her. There are no tax advantages and she wouldnt need to have a taxable income to have the 3b account. If you really want this life insurance option, then the 3b is worth looking into.

Why would you want to do that, no tax saving then pay tax later
Luckily I don't believe you can!

3a requires having a job, so won't work for OP. But why are saying there is no tax saving?

Because there is no employment income, so no tax deduction possible.

Although this probably isnít helpful for the OP, other thread readers may be interested to know that 3b has some (limited) tax deductibility in Geneva and Fribourg.

Re: Can I buy 3rd pillar for my unemployed wife?

Avenir Suisse says (translated):

"And in the third pillar, pension contracts can only be entered into by people who earn an income subject to AHV contributions. Non-working spouses cannot establish a pillar 3a. Parents who organize their childcare in such a way that one partner works 100% and the other (usually the wife) takes care of the children 100% are therefore worse off than couples who work the same amount overall, but share it among themselves."

Unemployment compensation is subject to AHV.
However in the case of the OP's wife, who has never worked, she is not receiving any unemployment compensation and therefore can not contribute to a 3a.

Re: Can I buy 3rd pillar for my unemployed wife?

Ok,

So here is a related question. I had an income and a 3pillar. I lost my job and will lost chomage in the summer [yes, I am under no illusions I will find another in the spring].

Can I pay into my 3a for 2021 given I had an income? Can I bank the full 6K given I will have worked for six months.

What about 2022. I guess my wife can pay into her own 3a? But wait she is considerably younger than me, better we invest in my 3a? or can I or is it?

Questions, questions, questions

Yes you can pay the full amount and deduct it even if you have only worked part of the year - there is not prorata there.
