UBS Card Reader Rant!

My UBS account originally came with a pre-historic calculator looking card reader thing to log into my account. Recently I use only the phone App for authentication to enter my account and make payment etc.

I am in the middle of making an important payment and it says because I have never payed to this account before I need to authenticate with the pre historic card reader. So I pull it out and as always the battery is flat on the device. Had only changed it few months ago. On top it uses 2 of those 2025 batteries so I need to get out of my pajamas and head out to buy them!

What is point of the authentication App if once in a while it wants me to use the ancient card reader that consumes battery like it is some super computer

Re: UBS Card Reader Rant!

You can call them (help line 24/7) and they can authorise the payment for you.

In your settings you can change the minimum amount for this check.

You can get a replacement credit card sized reader to replace your ancient one.

Re: UBS Card Reader Rant!

Thanks for that. As a test I tried changing the "Limit for payment made to new payees without any additional confirmation" to CHF1000 but to save the settings I need to use the calcualtor device too

So heading out, will get gipfeli for breakfast. For next time it won't be a problem thanks to you helpful advice

Looks like you got a duff reader, the batteries should not go that fast.

Re: UBS Card Reader Rant!

You can change it for a card that has the numbers/keypad on it, so you don’t need the reader. It’s still a pain to use though!

Re: UBS Card Reader Rant!

Is there a vision friendly version of the card reader device? The numbers are not that super readable for those without the perfect 20/20 eye sight. Or should they opt for the phone version instead, but still have to use the device once in a while?

If not urgent, you can call UBS and they'll send you a replacement card reader

I have three of those card readers and each ends up as low batteries after a few months too. They're awful devices.

Re: UBS Card Reader Rant!

Same problem here, had it many times. Terrible system.

Now, once you get past the battery problem, make sure you remember your pin! You only have 3 TRIES until the card gets blocked and you are blocked out - out of luck and out of an extra 10chuffs for a new card.

Another option is to make the payment at a "bancomat" - there you can enter a new payee.

Or do it in branch in person - but they will charge you a fee for that

Re: UBS Card Reader Rant!

CHF10 for 2 batteries. Payment done and limit increased. Hopefully don't have to touch the calculator looking device from the 80s for a long time.

Maybe remove the batteries until you next need it?

Just hop in at the next UBS and ask for a new one. My first one lasted several years until the battery died, don‘t use the current one very often but also no issues with a weak battery

You think it drains less even if switched off? Btw the battery removing mechanism is also so idiotic and difficult on my version.

It's a PITA in the older machines. I had to buy a specialized mini screw driver just to remove the tiny screw that held the batteries down.

Re: UBS Card Reader Rant!

Hi,

all you need to do is a find a ubs branch and use the multimat. It is only really a problem if you are outside Switzerland and need to use the card reader.

Have fun
Martin

Re: UBS Card Reader Rant!

But what about those who are lazy enough to go to a "multimat" ?
I completely agree that the UBS card reader is from a jurassic era especially since I rarely end up using it and eventually the battery dies down due to non usage.

Very clever! Was this a normal USB mini/micro lead that you hacked and would you mind sharing a picture of which wire goes where please?

Thanks.

Buy them in Italy or online, CHF 1 for 2!
