Moving to Switzerland in 2 weeks, opening a bank account from abroad

Hi everyone,

I accepted a job offer from Switzerland and will be moving there in 3 weeks. I already started my new employment but will be staying in the US for company training before relocating to Switzerland. I am an EU citizen.

My company HR is asking me to provide them a bank account number for my September salary by 15th September. Is there any way of opening a bank account without Swiss residency. So far, I only have an employment contract, an airbnb address for my first month and EU passport.

Many thanks

Hasan

Maybe. UBS has an online bank account opening option. Probably Credit Suisse and others do too.

EU citizen? Do you have an account from home country? Usually salaries can be deposited to any IBAN account. A small % is lost in the currency exchange, but for a couple months it can be convenient.

Do you have a green card, US passport or other US visa? This will change your options for banks....
Also without a Swisss residency permit, you might have a challenge.

Phone up one of the big two banks. Speaking to a person will give you more information than posting on here

Re: Moving to Switzerland in 2 weeks, opening a bank account from abroad

Postfinance is another option, you can apply online (in English!)and allegedly they still have to accept Americans.

But... I recall that it was IMPOSSIBLE to open the account without the actual physical permit. I had my official form issued from the Geminde that my permit had been approved and was on its way (They told me it was my "permit to get a permit"!). Yet Postfinance would not open the account properly until I had the real thing and presented it in person.

If you only have a US account, they don't always have IBANs. Another solution may be to open a Transferwise account. This can all be done online; comes with an IBAN; you can get paid in CHF and then transfer into any currency you need, at low cost/good rates.

Kind regards

Ian

I just moved to Switzerland this week and managed to open a bank account with UBS (Im EU btw). All they need are my EU passport, employment contract and Meldebestatigung.

And your fees at UBS rates...

PF is 5 a month, free if you have over 25k assets.

Situation has probably changed a bit since when I arrived.
