Gold vs Bitcoin

So if you had to buy either gold or bitcoin, which would you buy and why?

If you already own gold/bitcoin, how much do you hold of each?

60/40 bitcoin/gold split for me. I bought a lot back around Feb/Marc similar as I thought a market crash was on the way followed by a load of QE which I wanted protection from. Proved to be wrong there, however the bitcoin has done much better than expected since then so it's not all bad.

Re: Gold vs Bitcoin

I think there is a question behind the question

One way to look at it is applying a framework for valuation. After having done some reading I think this framework is interesting to think about bitcoin valuation

1. this is a tulip mania - no comparative advantage vs any monetary value -> bitcoin trends to 0

2. interesting but never becomes mainstream; only for the ideologically libertarian folks and the technologically savvy; it is intriguing but not for the average person and has a low basis of users -> bitcoin will have a lot of volatility and probably be in the 10k-100k range.

3. direct competitor to gold; same "properties" as gold but more effective (ex: you can store it yourself, transport it, etc.) ; all the monetary properties that make gold good for savings make bitcoin good for savings -> bitcoin probably $300K -$1M.

4. will become the world's reserve and take the place gold has had since 19th century. becomes a real store of value replacing gold and even real estate as a store of value (ex: replaces all those multi-million $$ mansions that sit empty) -> bicoin probabaly is around $10M-$100M valuation

If you're comparing gold vs bitcoin it sounds like you're an early adopter and probably view bitcoin as a competitor to gold. not sure if that's the case...
