Employer won't change address.. change of canton

Hi y'all.

I've started a new job in ZH and I used to live in VD. I started my job on 10/11/20 and I registered in ZH on 15/11/20. My November payslip came and went and I was taxed in VD.

Meanwhile, the back-end admin site of my employer is probably from the 80s and hardly works - all the changes I tried to put in have not been recorded i.e. my address, which remains in VD. I have been back and forth with HR about it and finally a payroll person says that they cannot retroactively change the address, so I will be taxed in VD for December.

I explained the date of my registration and that these address issues were an IT issue, turning into a big financial issue.

Do I have any leverage in this situation? I've sent them a copy of my registration in ZH and I'm awaiting a response. The December payment is supposed to come in the next 2 days so I'm not that hopeful but the fact that they are sending taxes to VD when I'm not even a resident there, is lazy.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum. Talk to your local steueramt (tax office in ZH), they'll be delighted to hear about this.

Nevermind - they quickly capitulated once they saw my registration.

Actually I could argue about November too, since I was only in VD for 5 days whereas I spent 12 days in ZH... anyway I let that one go.

It does not really matter what each payslip says as long as your yearly certificate is correct. You will pay all your 2020 taxes in Zurich.

Are you sure? When I moved cantons on tax at source (+ submitting a tax return) I paid tax to both cantons pro-rata based on the number of days I was resident in each canton.

I submitted one tax return for the whole year to the new canton (where I was resident at 31 Dec) then they sorted it out between themselves.

I eventually received two tax calculations independently from each canton - big bill from one and a refund from the other due to earnings/tax not being evenly spread.

If the same rule is applied in your case you might end up paying tax in VD until 14/11 then ZH for the rest of the year.

I believe this is only for C-permit holders who do not pay tax at source.

Apologies I thought this was the rule for all. Thank you for correcting me.

It's actually for anyone who files an annual tax return, including B (and L?) permit holders earning more than the ubiquitous chf120k pa.
