The job market of Valais

Hi!
Occasionally, I am travelling from Vaud to Valais (Sion, Sierre, Brig): the nature there is amazing, houses (both modern and old) look great, cars are very expensive and I even saw kids playing with a BostonDynamics Spot ..
As much as I do not want to be that guy I cannot help but ask the question: where do all those people work? As I am reviewing job ads, the job market is almost non-existent there, except for the usual stuff that is rather dependent on the rest of the economy.
Who are the people living there? Are those multi-generation Swiss, rich foreigners or remote workers?

Valais has the most 'forfeit' tax payers on any canton & about 25% of all of Switzerland, so rich foreigners who don't work in CH will own some of those cars & properties. They have tax bills of say 400,000 in CH v 4-10 million 'at home'

Around 1000 persons in VS fall under Pauschalbesteuerung. VS has a population of 345000.

Re: The job market of Valais

Not disagreeing with any of the previous posts, but there is actually quite a lot of small - medium industry all along the Rhone valley floor from Collombey to Sion, and beyond.

There is a significant daily flow of workers coming over the Morgins pass from France to work down thataway too.

Thanks, will do some day. It looks quite nice on pictures, living there definitely requires a solid source of income, and the scenery is amazing too, what's so different about this area?

To each their own but these areas are low to middle income dwellings and sharply contrast with the luxury estates and flashy cars you may have experienced in the likes of Verbier, Zermatt etc. The impression you got that most people in the canton live on passive inheritance income or are rich foreigners on tax deals is a misconstrued idea of reality

I have not actually been neither to Verbier nor Zermatt yet, I'd love to
What would be an inexpensive estate in Valais anyways? 600k? Yet it seems unrealistic to purchase such with no job or a low-paying job?

Pretty doable for a low dual income family (e.g. working as a cashier + as an administrative assistant for the state for example). You will find that in Switzerland people rarely fully pay off mortgages. After 50% equity, you are only paying interest every month which for a 600K home can be as low as 300.- per month.

Me and my husband are far from in “good jobs”. We live in a popular part of Valais and got our 3.5 room apartment for 290K.

What does happen to such properties when those people eventually die? Then I guess their relatives have an option of either splitting the property between the bank and themselves (such as selling it, and paying the bank their part) or continuing to pay the loan themselves?
I've read that it was possible to pay off the loan by the 3rd pillar + continuing to pay the loan from a pension. However only paying interest every month sounds even less optimistic than that path?
