Imagine if you were 35 years old, single, no kids, no debt, had 9-5 office job. What would/should you do if you received taxable CHF 2-3 millions?
Why donít you tell us?

Nothing like provoking useless, sexist responses with a senseless way of asking a question, no?

That's not fair to the OP. What in his question "provoked" a sexist response? It was a very normal hypothetical question. The "Single, no kids" was relevant to the financial planning side.

Why is my question senseless? I'm sure CHF 2-3 millions is very much within reach for many people working in Switzerland. It may happen at different stage of life for different people, but it will happen. Having a discusstion topic with different ideas can help plan financially in the long run.

Since you ask, I would probably invest and reduce my working hour and increase my volunteer hour.

I would build a small and awesome school. All welcome.

With a community art/music center in the basement. True underground!

This week I had a discussion with someone facing a similar dilemma, what to do with a couple of millions. It seems a common attitude in Switzerland is keep working, saving and investing. The best case is working less, maybe having an additional day or two off per week. If you see men working 80% or less, the chance is good they are multimillionaires.
True that.

I know a Swiss guy who got very lucky with Apple stock. I have no idea how much he made but his vacation destinations and car don't correlate with his presumed salary.

He asked his boss if he could reduce from 100% to 80% and the boss said no.

A lot of angry threats and arguments and two years later the boss has said yes.

Try and meet someone and have kids, and work to be able to retire by the time the kids have gone to university.

Having 2 to 3 million in your pocket definitely makes it easier to find someone.

Even in Switzerland.

Re: What would you do with CHF 2-3 millions ?

The question explicitly says they are taxable. In which country? I am afraid those 2-3 milions may be reduced to 0.75-1.25. At that point, it is really worthless to think of them as money, more to think of them as a burden.

Why senseless? Swisslos has 2.8 million in the jackpot, OP probably played and by Monday he wants this sorted. What better place to get financial advise than EF?

I liked the part "imagine you were 35" ... I'm still doing it.

As a US citizen, first thing I'd do is find a really good accountant / tax lawyer.

Re: What would you do with CHF 2-3 millions ?

A three million windfall might seem like a lot when one is young and single. But it likely isn't enough to see you through to the end. So invest wisely.

Life has a way of throwing curve balls, expenses you might not have seen coming. Might not even be your own financial emergency, rather that of family you love and want, or feel duty-bound, to help. A healthy cushion, invested wisely, may seem boring at 35, but it will be a godsend later in life.

---

So, assuming my rainy day fund is already healthy and safely set aside, what would I do with a 3 million windfall?

1. A farm house on 100 acres in Vermont. And a snow plow.

Then with the remaining 2,500,000 I'd:

2. Endow a fund at one of the university veterinary school clinics to fund care for pet owners who cannot afford it.

3. Invite all the homeless collies I can find to live happily ever after with me on that Vermont farm.

Choices 2 and 3 would still require a wise investment strategy so I'll refer you back to Fatmanfilm's post.

Since you put it like that ok, and being fairly new OP has no idea what kind jokers we have on EF.

I would invest 50% in Fundsmith & 50% in Smithson, then give notice to quit my job.
Remember to deduct (most of) the income tax first. There's no point in taking the risk of it dropping massively by the time you actually have to pay the income tax, this would increase the taxman's ratio more than necessary. And spread the risk, your suggestion is too concentrated.

This, but I wouldn't necessarily quit my job.
This.
Give yourself time to adjust to the new circumstances.

And don't brag about it, otherwise you risk attracting lots of bloodsuckers. Read up on lotto millionaires if you think that's a myth.

Remember to have separate goods. Divorce laws massively favor the ex-wife.

I would definitely try to find a way to use that money to make more money. I use to think of 2 to 3 million as being a LOT of money that can go quite far. But then I moved to Switzerland.
