Online shopping from Germany

Hello,

I wanna buy something from an online shop from Germany. The shop when i choose my country, removes their VAT and adds the Swiss VAT (7.7%). Will I have to pay import taxes or anything else? Is it different if I buy the same thing from Amazon.de?

Thanks

If you were to add details of the vendor you might find someone willing to share experience of previous dealings.

Information:

With Amazon you have to be careful who is doing the shipping.Shipped by Amazon -pre-payment of import charges. Shipped by third parties. Often no pre-payment -you get hit by VAT and an administation fee.
You will need to check with your supplier if they pre-pay the customs clearance

It’s very unlikely that there will be anything additional to pay. However, I have ordered skis from France and despite the seller adding Swiss MwSt I still had to pay a couple of Francs duties on delivery. The goods were delivered with Swiss Post and the duties collected on delivery. The admin charge was about 500% the cost of the duties! I expected it though so was no problem.

Re: Online shopping from Germany

I suggest you find out which incoterms apply. Eg Zalando (Amazon as well I think) uses DDP with Swiss Post, and some of my electronics suppliers (Mouser, Digikey) use DDP with UPS, FEDEX, etc, so I pay Swiss VAT when buying and nothing more after.

Polymath, but dont you choose the option of collisimo ,mondial relay, meaning the parcel will be delivered in one of the shops, gas station etc and they you just collect it ..in and around St Louis , since it's only 10min from BS... or in Weil am Rhein,Lörach if you purchase something from a german site?

As I understand it, regardless of shipping and duties being paid by the sender, if your package is selected for inspection you can probably expect there will be an admin fee to pay.

Many items I have delivered to LAS Burg in Weil am Rhein or to a Hermes pickup point if possible when buying from Amazon (free to collect). I never used a pickup point in France as I never had any need or saw any major benefit. It’s easier to reclaim the MwSt when exporting from Germany.

In the case of the skis in my example above, the total cost was lower to ship to Switzerland, exclude the French TVA, pay the Swiss MwSt to the vendor and the duties and admin fee on arrival. Hence, I went with that option.

It makes sense. but obviously you're not a shopping junkie , now it's sales time and shops like Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, M&S are delivering in few days the goods (fr pick up point) no taxes , small delivery charge (not more than 6-7euros) or with Selfridges there's even an annual fee and we get free delivery.

For sure I’m not a shopping junkie So far I was always able to buy what I need usually with free delivery to Germany and in the vast majority of cases claiming the MwSt back. It couldn’t get any better!

Re: Online shopping from Germany

Wow, thanks guys for all the replies. I wanna buy IT stuff from caseking probably. Another solution is from France, but again some shops are not delivering, so I could use a parcel forwarding service. I'm talking about a GPU, so total amount will be high... of course Amazon would be the most preferred solution, but it's not always easy to find something good and not crazy expensive.
